Isaiah calls all of Israel to hope in the promises of God and prepare for his total restoration of all creation to himself. His justice will bring about fullness for all who will believe. We are called to see that God does have a plan. We can trust his promises and rely on him in times of uncertainty, because he will prove faithful to the end.

The Servant calls our attention to God’s justice for the whole world. We must admit that God desires good for all of humanity—even if some human beings don’t want the good he offers for themselves. Our task is to live in response to the goodness of God so that the world can enjoy the mercy he longs to give.

God permitted nations to overtake Israel, but only for a season. As their relationship is restored, he will bring justice for the way that her captors took advantage of her. God’s justice is always on time, even when it seems we have waited so long for it. As his children, we are called to trust that his redemption will be swift and his vengeance clear.

Isaiah introduces the character of the Lord’s Servant, with the goal of encouraging Israel to see the bigger picture of suffering and God’s plans. Even though we suffer in this life, it shouldn’t mean that God doesn’t see us. Instead of getting stuck in the mire of despair, God reminds us that his Servant has come to us in Jesus Christ. Our hope rests and is restored in God’s work through him, but to see this we must continue to walk in faith and trust in God.

God is both merciful and just. The justice of God demands that sin be dealt with in our lives, but mercy calls for God to be compassionate in his judgments. The book of Isaiah called Israel to repentance in many ways and yet also set the stage for both her redemption and the ultimate redemption of the world. This six-week series unpacks a series of key passages that point to the demand for God’s justice and the exercise of mercy on those who don’t deserve it.

God expects Israel to live out individual and societal justice among her own people just as he has exhibited toward them. We are commanded to imitate God in our lives. How well are we reflecting his justice in the world?
