Heisnam Kanhailal and Ratan Thiam were the titular theatre personalities who used theatre on stage as a tool of protest and resistance since the sixties after independence. Sahitya Patra - Episode 08 - History of Manipur's Theatre (before independence)
Manipur, one of the important states in northeast India, practices a variety of theatre compared to other states across the country. In pre-independent India, they did not perform only Bengali drama but concentrated on the presentation of their own original drama and the predominance of Manipuri culture in it was prominent. The theatre practice of Manipur progressed till independence. This episode is about those stories.

In Tripura, the genre of theatre influenced by the royals began to change after independence. Many new groups and new theatre practitioners started to emerge. Beyond religious and lyrical dramas, theatre about the problems of the local people residing in the hill region of Tripura began to be written and performed. Sahitya Patra - Episode 05 - The New Era in Assamese Theatre Post-independence
The country became independent from the British rule. But the independence for which the Indians fought for 200 years unfortunately seemed to be a distant dream. There was the pain of partition, then economically and socially the independent Indian citizens were facing never-faced-before problems. But they also understood what freedom means. Theatre as well as social changed radically. Assamese theatre started its journey towards a new era. With the departure of historical, mythological and religious plays, intense social consciousness started to take a prominent place in Assamese theatre.

ইংরেজ শাসনের থেকে মুক্তি পেয়ে দেশ সবেমাত্র স্বাধীন হয়েছে। কিন্তু যে স্বাধীনতার জন্য পরাধীন দেশের মানুষ দীর্ঘদিন লড়াই করেছেন, দেশ স্বাধীন হওয়ার পরে সে স্বাধীনতা কেউ প্রত্যক্ষ করল না। একদিকে দেশভাগের যন্ত্রণা, অন্যদিকে অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিকভাবে বিপর্যস্ত সাধারণ মানুষ তখন স্বাধীনতার স্বাদ বুঝতে শুরু করে দিয়েছে। সামাজিক জীবনের পাশাপাশি নাটকের ক্ষেত্রেও তখন আমূল পালটে গেল অনেক কিছুই। অসমীয়া নাটক এক নতুন যুগের দিকে যাত্রা শুরু করল। ঐতিহাসিক, পৌরাণিক, ধর্মীয় নাটক বিদায় নিয়ে তীব্র সমাজচেতনা উঠে এল নাটকের মধ্যে।
