Tinker your way to scale: James Dyson

Tinker your way to scale: James Dyson

James Dyson's journey to building a global invention enterprise began with a simple goal: to build a better vacuum. After 5,000+ prototypes and years of precise tinkering, his innovative bagless vacuum was ready. But none of the big brand names wanted it. So he started the Dyson company, betting that customers would be swayed by new technology, better performance, and distinctive design. Today the Dyson Corporation commands $9 billion in annual revenue, and — driven by engineering curiosity — develops products from air purifiers to hair dryers, even making a big bet on an electric car (that never hit the market). James Dyson’s inspiring story of scale involves challenging experts at every turn, relentless iteration, and a resilient view of failure as a stepping stone to the next breakthrough.

Meet “Reid-ish”: The Story of Cloning Reid Hoffman’s Voice

Meet “Reid-ish”: The Story of Cloning Reid Hoffman’s Voice

Masters of Scale goes under the hood of powerful AI in audio, unveiling a full vocal clone for founding host Reid Hoffman. Our CEO Jeff Berman, the Masters of Scale staff, and Reid himself tell the story of creating a synthetic voice we call “Reid-ish.” The company Respeecher is behind the technology, and its CEO Alex Serdiuk walks us through the speech replication process. Through “Reid-ish” we grapple with authenticity, disclosure, labor, and evolving norms around AI in media. Reid ponders what’s possible for greater sharing and learning through this audio technology, as well as what listeners should know about its use.

Cannot do without it

Reid and his team have put efforts, intelligence, research, experience and some serious thinking into it. There is absolutely nothing like it out there, it is one of the most useful and best learning opportunities available if you want to run a business, create a start-up or explore ideas. Perhaps the most amazing feeling is that Reid seems to be doing it as a genuine gift to us, it has the audience and our (founders) day-to-day strategic issues in mind. A big thank you.

A clear window into the SV bubble

Masters of Scale is an enjoyable and well-produced podcast. I learn from the interviews and find many of them thought-provoking and applicable to my job and my ambitions.

My one request is to hear more about solving real problems. I am thinking about Pierre Omidyar’s idea that businesses can be the best way to solve social issues. A lot of the episodes cover businesses like Facebook or Airbnb or twitter that are of questionable real social value and of interest mostly in the vc/sv bubble, and that are almost all online. I would love to hear more about efforts to scalable attack poverty, inequality, etc.

That said, I really enjoy and learn from this. Thanks again!

Best food for the brain and training for the body

I follow a few podcasts and this is my favourite by miles. Reid's interviews are fabulous and the topics and people he brings are always super interesting to listen to. Please keep on producing this amazing content. Podcasts are good for your health, at least for mine. I do my 8 or 10 daily Kms always listening to podcasts which make them a pleasure.
