Wendy Day Interview - Music Business & Marketing Masterclass

Wendy Day Interview - Music Business & Marketing Masterclass

If you don't know her....you don't take the rap game seriously. ⁣🤷‍♂️⁣

I can't do her justice in this little description but just a brief FYI:⁣⁣

Wendy is a mentor and consultant for hip-hop artists. In about 1992, she founded the not-for-profit organization Rap Coalition, helping artists navigate the industry more advantageously. ⁣⁣

She also operates the music-consulting company PowerMoves, which advises artists and independent record labels on options without sponsorship by a major record label. PowerMoves also helps artists gain direct investors apart from record labels.⁣⁣

She authored the book How to Get a Record Deal⁣ 📘⁣

    She negotiated Cash Money's 30 million dollar deal.⁣ 💰⁣

She negotiated David Banner's 10 million dollar deal⁣ tax 💰⁣

Also negotiated for Twista, Eminem, and Master P just to name a few⁣ 💰⁣

Day organized the 1997 Rap Olympics, whereby Eminem, invited by Day via his demo tape Infinite to perform, gained an Interscope Records deal.⁣ 📀⁣

Day also assisted Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, the Hot Boys, C-Murder, Fiend, Do or Die, Boosie, Webbie, David Banner, Ras Kass, Trouble, and Young Buck, among others.⁣⁣

Altogether, Day's clients have sold over $1 billion of sound recordings 💲💲💲💲⁣

This is a private Zoom call where members of the SEM The Label artist community were able to ask Wendy questions directly. She was so generous with her time and gave us over 2 hours! It was a master class in the music business for sure. We are forever grateful. ⁣

This video contains roughly the first hour where I interviewed Wendy. It contains an incredible amount of information on music marketing strategies in 2020.⁣

Interview with Chris Schwartz: Ruffhouse Records Founder & CEO About His Book & The Music Business

Approximately the first 34 minutes are about Chris, his book, Ruffhouse Records, and old school hip hop from Schoolly D to the Fugees. The second half of the interview we dive into music business advice for artist.

    Chris’s Book:

Ruffhouse: From the Streets of Philly to the Top of the '90s Hip-Hop Charts

    Mentioned Book:

The History of Gangster Rap: From Schoolly D to Kendrick Lamar

    Songs mentioned:

Coolin in Cali (audio) - 7A3

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmBIW-XRs7c

    The Piper (Video) - Cheeba

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-OEmg0bi7I

Typical American (Video ) - The Goats

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_F2FDpU1mM
    Mentioned Stories::

Chris swiping Schoolly D’s phone number from a rolodex
Schoolly D and Chris become neighbors
The Goats received more fan mail over a 15 year period than all the other Ruffhouse label mates combined.
You can be dropped by the Amercian branch of a label and still have huge success overseas.
Wyclef Jean taking off all his clothes and performing in his boxers during an office audition.
    Music Business advice for artist:
In the era of mumble rap, does great song writing still matter?
If you aren’t creating your own market, you’re just following.
The greatest way to perfect the craft of songwriting (or anything really) is to network with other songwriters.
Don’t torture people you want to connect with by spamming them with your music.
His label never got a demo in the mail and signed that artist.
    The secret is YOUR NETWORK!
Less is more. Don’t send a demo with 14 or 18 songs. No one has time for that. Send 2 bangers.
Make sure you send a photo or video with the demo.
You have to sell the label before you every sell to the general public.
Major distributors are looking for 20 to 30 million hits on streaming/social media/YouTube.
Get Online to Get Offline. The entertainment business is a relationship business.
We are a singles driven music culture. Singles not albums.
The missing element of A&R. Man artist haven’t developed live show skills in this era.
Touring companies are creating small venues in order to develop artist.
    Put together a focus group!
    Matthew Knowles holds a grudge.
Will AI put beatmakers, producers, and musicians out of work?
    Chris online:
    Instagram.com/ruffnationrecordsoffiicial
Side bars into a story about Chuck D sitting outside of Schoolly D’s house for two hours!

Music Marketing Interview with Indie Hip Hop Artist Sunny da Man

Music Marketing Interview with Indie Hip Hop Artist Sunny da Man

Music Marketing Interview: Sunny da Man is a student in my courses ( www.marketingbigbox.com ) and now a friend of mine. He has really earned my respect by taking massive action.  One of the best examples of this, which you will hear in the interview, is when I suggested to him instead of taking just Flyers to a conference he should make up water bottles with his name and music on them. It would create an opportunity to give to people, and serve them, instead of just asking them to come listen to him.  He took that idea and made a lot of great connections, got a lot of standout attention, and was even stopped by A&R's.

TOP TEN LESSONS INDIE ARTIST SHOULD TAKE AWAY FROM MY INTERVIEW WITH “SUNNY DA MAN”

    1. “Do” - Take action make adjustments along the way

    2. Hit the streets. (Go online to get offline) Network with Everybody! Grassroots guerilla marketing still works.

    3. There are no losses, just lessons.

    4. Master live shows. Have an actual rehearsed routine.

    5. Do showcases but remember at the showcases……….THE NETWORKING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE PERFORMANCE.

    6. Don’t just hide out in a studio for years making music. (See #1 and #5).

    7. Stop procrastinating. Time lost can never be regaind.

    8. Have something prepared to hand out everywhere you go. Flyers are good but get more creative. NEVER EVER SHOW UP WITHOUT SOMETHING TO GIVE OUT!

    9. If you are serious about music….attend festivals like A3C.

    10. Be patient. Make sure the quality of your work is in line with your brand.
