In this episode I get to share with you a conversation I had with Helms and Greg Jarrell from QC Family Tree in Charlotte, North Carolina. It would be impossible to describe in detail in this short introduction all of the ways they contribute to their community. They are each in their own unique ways community builders, parents, activists, artists, pastors, and good friends. We get a good amount of laughter in around some pretty tough topics related to power and privilege, but the heart of our conversation is the same as topic of Greg's book that was just released: community and belonging. In this podcast I get to share with you my dear, courageous, strong friend, Lauren Barnett. Lauren is one of my most beautiful and eclectic friends and our conversation is going to prove it. Lauren most recently has been a housing advocate with Habitat for Humanity in Charlotte, North Carolina where affordable housing has been a crisis for years. The focus of our talk is on issues of power and culture, which led us into some pretty dynamic and diverse topics such as Beyoncé, the womanist movement, the purity movement, evangelicalism, finding a church where she can exist as a black woman, the nature of kingdom work and the meaning of spiritual formation. Today I get to share the beautiful Charysse Johnson with you. Or, as I and many others call her…Resi. Resi is a therapist in Charlotte, North Carolina and is so good at what she does. She is also a mom and a wife with a gorgeous smile and heart. From parenting styles to NFL players kneeling to grooming black children…we are talking about being Black today.
