Maureen O'Connor
Maureen O’Connor was San Diego’s first female mayor, serving from 1986 to 1992. She had a meteoric rise to political stardom in San Diego local politics, starting in the early 70s when she became the city's youngest councilmember ever, at twenty-five years old. However, Maureen O’Connor recently made headlines in 2013 for her dizzying, billion-dollar gambling addiction that resulted in her embezzling $2 million from her late husband’s charity. In this episode, Julia Price and Julia Boccabella go beyond the tabloid headlines–or, "Between the Lines"– and retell former Mayor Maureen O'Connor's story. As they document her life from humble beginnings in Mission Hills, to the secluded mansions of Point Loma and La Jolla, the two Julias ask the question: how do we remember a woman so groundbreaking, and yet so imperfect?
