Analyst perspectives: Global energy markets – Lulu Xiong and Jin Hwang

Analyst perspectives: Global energy markets – Lulu Xiong and Jin Hwang

Today on the show, we welcome Equity Research Analysts Lulu Xiong and Jin Hwang. They provide a global tour of energy markets, including a discussion on tailwinds and headwinds for energy companies today. Jin claims that there is currently a substantial fear regarding OPEC due to a large amount “sitting on the sidelines”. Its producers may be inclined to increase production however due to the recent major increases in oil prices. Oil prices were fundamentally driven at the start of 2024, although over the last couple of months we’ve seen an uptick primarily due to a risk premium aspect. The current prices are sitting well above the marginal cost of production, which will eventually lead to a correctional response.  In regards to Capital Expenditures, there is only a finite amount of tier one economic resource. The transition into the second phase of resources could potentially begin before the decade is finished, and this is when CAPEX budgets will begin creeping in and the need for rebuilding will become paramount.

Q2 2024 dividend investing outlook – Don Newman

Q2 2024 dividend investing outlook – Don Newman

Today on the show, we welcome dividend investor Don Newman. Don gives an update on the dividend landscape noting that dividends are currently thriving in the economy and where he sees them heading in the next few months. Don notes stability in the economy has led to most companies being in good financial standing. Interest rates remain sticky plus the number of expected rate cuts have reduced leading to a more favourable market sentiment. Don suggests this has also led to a Goldilocks scenario where the economy remains stable, inflation decreases slightly, and the stock market benefits. He adds historically low interest rates have punished savers, forcing them into riskier investments for higher returns. However, dividend stocks remain attractive, especially during rate cuts, as their yields remain stable or even increase over time.  As rates decrease, dividend yields become comparatively more attractive than other investment options. Don says this trend is expected to continue, making dividend stocks a promising choice for investors.

    Jurrien Timmer's global macro view – April 22, 2024

    Jurrien Timmer's global macro view – April 22, 2024

Jurrien Timmer, Fidelity's Director of Global Macro, is back on the show today to discuss the current state of the markets and the economic factors affecting them. Jurrien points out that while markets frequently experience drawdowns, it's important to see these movements in context. For example, the S&P 500's recent 6% drop follows a significant rally. He speaks to the role of rising interest rates and their impact on market dynamics, highlighting a shift in the stock-to-bond correlation from negative to positive, which historically indicates less favorable conditions for equities. He also addresses the shift in investor expectations regarding the Fed's policies, noting the resilience of the economy despite high rates and persistent inflation, which suggests that the current monetary policy might be less restrictive than it appears. He also elaborates on the implications of earnings forecasts, particularly for big tech companies, suggesting that these firms are less sensitive to rate fluctuations due to their substantial cash reserves. He also suggests that while the equity market has shown signs of broadening, investors should maintain a long-term perspective despite potential short-term declines.
