Insights: Reflecting on one year of HSBC Innovation Banking UK
On this episode of Fintech Insider Insights, host David M. Brear is joined by Simon Bumfrey, Head of Technology & Life Sciences at HSBC Innovation Banking UK.
In June 2023, HSBC Innovation Banking UK was launched at London Tech Week, following HSBC's acquisition of Silicon Valley Bank UK in March.
It was one of the fastest and smoothest acquisitions ever with fintechs, banks, regulators and more coming together to make the transaction over a weekend.
And just 3 months later HSBC Innovation Banking launched, taking the specialist knowledge of SVB and the global reach of HSBC, to enable businesses focused on innovation to compete globally.
HSBC Innovation Banking UK has 700 employees and is a specialised banking proposition for businesses in cutting-edge sectors, such as tech and life sciences, and their investors.
So we want to find out a little more about HSBC Innovation Banking and reflect on the last year since that initial launch.
This week's guest: Simon Bumfrey, Head of Technology & Life Sciences, HSBC Innovation Banking UK

Focus: Can European digital wallets challenge the dominance of the big tech players?
In this episode, in collaboration with Visa, 11:FS host David Barton-Grimley, alongside Eddie Onaga, Vice President, Head of Digital Partnerships - Europe at Visa, is looking at the growth, rise and future of digital wallets in Western Europe.
Digital wallets aren’t new, but with the rise of mobile technology and customers turning more and more to digital and contactless payment options post-pandemic the market is set to grow and grow.
Digital wallets are set to account for up to 30% of e-commerce transactions in Europe this year, going up to over 50% in the UK alone by 2027. They are not going anywhere so we want to peel back the curtain of their rise and success and see what might be next on the horizon in this space.
We also respond to the (at time of recording) hot off the press announcement from Apple that they will now give rivals access to the contactless payments technology on iPhones in Europe, meaning that their users will no longer be limited to the Apple Pay mobile wallet, and dig into the impact this could have on the space.
This week's guests are:
Deniz Oran, Head of Payments Partnerships at Google
Baard Slaattelid, Director Strategic Payment Partnerships at Vipps

Insights: Can fintech plug the SME funding gap?
On this episode of Fintech Insider Insights, host Kate Moody is joined by some great guests to take a look at SMEs.
It's a tough funding landscape for SMEs in the UK and beyond right now, and the downturn in funding from big banks despite increasing demand.
But it’s not all doom and gloom, the big banks’ hesitancy is creating an ideal opportunity space for fintechs, neobanks and alternative lenders to play in and become market leaders, further disrupting the banks, and furthering their growth journeys.
We're joined by a fantastic panel of guests who know a thing or two about this space to dig deeper into this.
This week's guests:
Valentina Kristensen, Corporate Affairs Director at OakNorth
Christoph Rieche, CEO and co-founder of iwoca
Brian Baldacchino, Head of Lending Strategy & Corporate Development, at Allica Bank
