General Election Special: Week 1 - Farage is back

Welcome to the first Two Matts General Election special podcast - and you join us with the breaking news that Nigel Farage has thrown himself into the campaign in a surprise announcement - taking over the leadership of Reform and running to win the Tory-held seat of Clacton. It’s the worst news Sunak could have wished for - but how should Starmer be feeling? Is the Labour leader fully aware of what he’s up against? The Matts are, as you’d expect, sceptical.

How did Diane Abbott derail Keir Starmer?

How did Diane Abbott derail Keir Starmer?

How did Keir Starmer allow the row over Diane Abbott swamp the early days of his election campaign? What is the upside? And had Abbott been mistreated to the point where the Labour leadership looks petty and vindictive? The Matts weigh in on the big campaign trail talking point. Also - in part two - the brilliant Alan Edwards, author of I Was There, tells all about life with Bowie, The Stones, The Spice Girls … and a whole A-Z of rock’s rich and famous. The Matts are joined by author and journalist Caitlin Moran to talk about men and the manisphere. What can men learn from the progress women made with feminism? It’s a broad spectrum conversation veering from pornography to football, from the benefits of banter to why so many men are so bad at friendships. Welcome to six weeks of political mayhem and the end of an error

Welcome to six weeks of political mayhem and the end of an error

Special bonus podcast on this week's big story ... no, not Paula Vennell's disgrace in the Post Office Scandal ... no, not the Infected Blood scandal ... no, not the huge upswing in migrants crossing the channel ... not the news that mortgage rate cuts will be delayed until August, nor the news that the Rwanda flights will probably never happen... it's the big news that Rishi Sunak has decided that everything's getting better and decided now is the time to hold a General Election. The Matts are joined by New European political editor James Ball and say Bring It On!

Highly amusing

Actually I was surprised at how much I learnt a lot of good insights and comment.

Essential listening for Rejoiners!

This podcast has evolved a lot over the years. It used to be a pub-style exchange between two blokes from Yorkshire who also happen to be seasoned newspaper journalists, who spent a lot of their time lampooning Brexiteers. That format was a bit boring at times, even though the show was always listenable. But now there is just Steve Anglesey left as sole presenter, it is even better, as he interviews writers for The New European, which is a fantastic newspaper that deserves to be more widely read. So for Rejoiners this is an essential complement to other podcasts like “Oh God What Now?” and “Brexit and Beyond”. By supporting this podcast and the New European you are keeping the flame burning in a barren media landscape, so my recommendation is to subscribe to both the podcast and the newspaper. We need to support the likes of the New European, the Guardian, the New Statesman and Private Eye in order to maintain some semblance of political balance in the UK media.

Keep up the good work

I am a Brit living in deepest darkest France, my fifth European country to have lived in, so truly European. I still care deeply about what happens in the UK and rely on you two guys to keep me abreast of The New European’s views (but I do listen to other podcasts as well as per your advice). I listen whilst walking my dogs in the fields every Saturday and really enjoy listening to your perspective on all things Britain. Must confess I am a Kier fan as well, never has so much hope been put on the shoulders of one person, no pressure Kier. Here’s hoping the sniper finally takes out the scatter gun merchant, step by step.
