BEST OF: Chris Pronger: NHL Hall of Famer Unpacks His Career Journey on and Off the Ice

BEST OF: Chris Pronger: NHL Hall of Famer Unpacks His Career Journey on and Off the Ice

    FIRST AIRED: 4/4/23

Chris Pronger is a former NHL Hall of Fame defenseman. Chris was drafted second overall by the Hartford Whalers in 1993 and has also played for the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, and Philadelphia Flyers. He’s appeared in the Stanley Cup finals with three different teams and won the Cup with the Ducks in 2007. He also won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player for the 1999–2000 season.

A mainstay on Team Canada, Chris won Olympic gold medals at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics and is a member of the Triple Gold Club. Today, Chris runs Well Inspired Travels alongside his wife.

    This Episode’s Heavy-hitter’s:

Chris actually didn’t grow up watching hockey other than on Saturday nights, which was the one night a week it came on TV in his area. But he definitely played every day with his older brothers and friends!

Chris says he had one of the top 5 Stanley Cup parties of all time, where he invited the Sugar Ray band to come to play.

One of the biggest challenges retired athletes face is figuring out a new way to spend their time that fulfills them. When you’re a professional athlete, most of your schedule is determined for you, so it’s a new type of pressure once you leave.

When he worked with the Florida Panthers as Vice President of Operations, Chris had to remove himself from the everyday wins and losses of the team in order to be an effective leader. Coming in as a former player, it was hard to delineate himself from what was happening on the ice.

Chris works on Well Inspired Travels with his wife, and his secret to being business partners with your spouse is to make sure you make time aside from work with the family.

BEST OF: Todd Kaplan: CMO @ Pepsi: Culture Bending Creative & Entrepreneurial Leader

BEST OF: Todd Kaplan: CMO @ Pepsi: Culture Bending Creative & Entrepreneurial Leader

    First Aired: 4/22/22

Todd Kaplan is the Chief Marketing Officer at Pepsi. In his role, he oversees all brand creative, communications and commercial execution across Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Zero Sugar, while building a long term strategy and new product innovation for the brand overall.

He has implemented a unique “culture in, brand out” approach, which has led him to develop big cultural moments, like bringing J. Lo and Shakira to the 2020 Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime show, making history as the first two Latina artists to headline the event. More recently, he put together the 2022 halftime show with landmark Hip Hop and R&B acts like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J Blige and 50 Cent.

    This Episode’s Heavy-hitter’s:

Todd started the first student-run ad agency in the country after observing how poor marketing and targeting was in on-campus advertising.

Todd’s entry point into Pepsico was approaching Indra Nooyi at a speaking event at his Alma Mater, Yale. He impressed Indra, the former CEO of Pepsico, enough in their time speaking, and it panned out for him at a time where Pepsico didn’t even recruit from Yale.

As an entrepreneurial person, Todd’s role at Pepsico has given him the unique experience of launching a variety of different products, in both the food and beverage categories.

When designing the packaging around Bubbly, Todd took inspiration from Taco Bell’s hot sauce packets, which each have funny and quirky sayings on them.

The first place that Todd looks on a resume is the area at the bottom– where candidates list their interests, so that he can get a better feel for culture fit and who a candidate is as a person.
