Biden’s peace plan, Faiza Shaheen’s deselection & festival boycotts

Biden’s peace plan, Faiza Shaheen’s deselection & festival boycotts

As the election campaign ramps up, Labour have got themselves into hot water over the deselection of candidate Faiza Shaheen. Is Labour guilty of double standards on antisemitism and Islamophobia in the party, and is there a cynical attempt to weaponise racism for factional political purposes?
Sayeeda and David discuss Biden’s ceasefire plan and whether it’s what Israel and Hamas really want.
Hay Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival and Cheltenham Literature Festival have all cut ties with their sponsor over links to the fossil fuel industry and alleged links to Israel. Has this been an effective strategy in the cultural fight against Israel or is the boycott bonkers?

The Muslim vote, Rafah despair and graffitied cinemas

The Muslim vote, Rafah despair and graffitied cinemas

A General Election has been called, and David & Sayeeda discuss the Muslim vote and whether Gaza will be top of the agenda for voters, and whether the election campaign will be dominated by divisive rhetoric.
David & Sayeeda then reflect on the terrible images that have been coming out of Rafah this week, as well as the screening of a documentary about the horrors of October 7th which led to accusations of 'artwashing' and violent protests in East Finchley, North London. But what were the protests about and how have the far right somehow managed to co-opt them again?
Also Spain, Norway and Ireland have recognised the state of Palestine. It is high time the UK followed suit?

A new Jew and the ICC arrest warrants

A new Jew and the ICC arrest warrants

David’s away, so Sayeeda is joined by journalist and new Jew for the week Hugo Rifkind. They discuss Hugo's Scottish Jewishness, Jews as an ethnic minority and those against multiculturalism, as well as the International Criminal Court’s recent application for arrest warrants for the Israeli PM, defence minister and three Hamas leaders. Are war crimes inevitable in any conflict? Does Israel care how it’s viewed on the world stage? And Sayeeda tests Hugo’s Scottish-Yiddish.

Israel & Pakistan, Netanyahu & Modi and the not so divine madness of Christian Zionism

Israel & Pakistan, Netanyahu & Modi and the not so divine madness of Christian Zionism

With David in India and Sayeeda heading to Pakistan, they discuss India’s ongoing elections and what they mean for the country's 200 million Muslims. They ask whether Modi and Netanyahu are kindred spirits, and look at Pakistan and Israel’s surprisingly similar history.
After that, they tackle Christian Zionism in the US and how it influences Trump and politics worldwide.

Relief to have nuanced discussion

I love listening to this podcast because I love hearing two people coming from different places discussing complex and difficult topics with respect, intelligence and nuance. I agree that the Baroness often wipes the floor with David, but he should be less lazy and actually do some research to enable him to challenge her more coherently. She is a highly intelligent and educated woman and it shows, but he isn't stupid. I never thought I would listen to a Tory with such admiration for her insight and knowledge.

Please could someone make a programme like this between a Transwoman and a Feminist academic? We really need these types of conversations and less screaming, shouting, accusing and silencing of different POV! Please someone make that show!

Some comments were shocking!

I have been keenly listening to this podcast and although, I have been enjoying this last episode ok 06/06 David left me shocked. His effort to justify how IDF is carefully conducting this war where 5 Hiroshima size bombed so far have been dropped and 70% infrastructure gone! On average 100 civilians have been killer daily, and David justifies by saying they could if they wanted to flatten everything! Please stop pretending you’re just a cultural non zionist jew as it’s certainly isn’t coming across as one!

Feel bad for David

Great listen for the first few weeks but this week particularly it’s apparent that as much as these conversations are difficult and open one of these presenters is a politician who is highly skilled at getting her political points across and the other just an open minded guy.
Sadly this leads to David being a bit steam rolled with diatribes which often leads to Sayeeda saying things completely unchecked such as ‘I don’t think people in Hamas want to create a Muslim state in Israel’ which is easy provable as false.
Would be nice if the conversations were more natural without all the pre-prep and planned speeches. It’s great to hear different points of view but the past few weeks has felt like a diatribe from Sayeeda and it’s more and more like her audio opinion column.
