    The Jim Russell Collection

    The Jim Russell Collection

A unique sale is the focus for this episode of Auction Torque. We go behind the scenes as the Cheffins team have been enlisted to sell a collection of Ferguson memorabilia amassed by the late Jim Russell following a lifetime of dedication to sourcing a plethora of exceptional and rare items. Jim’s collection is renowned in collecting circles and the sale is a key date in the calendar for those wishing to add bespoke pieces.

We speak to Tom Godsmark from Cheffins, who describes the complexities of dealing with scale models, as opposed to large agricultural machinery, and how the team went about cataloguing over 700 items and moving the collection back to Sutton for the sale.

We are privileged to be joined by Stuart Gibbard, an agricultural historian who was a good friend of Jim’s and helped source several items in the collection. Stuart talks us through the collection’s history and relevance, including how Jim built an extension to his house to store the Ferguson Brown tractor, a deal which Stuart brokered. Alongside this, there are some meticulously built scale models and the final minute book including Harry Ferguson’s final signature.

Finally, journalist and presenter Charlotte Vowden talks about her experience at the cataloguing day and how she found the emotional aspect of having to watch a family make the decision to disperse of a lifetime collection. Charlotte is also writing two columns in Practical Classics magazine on the sale and will be on social media during sale day.

The sale takes place at Cheffins' saleground in Sutton, Ely on Saturday 25th November with a preview day on Friday 24th November. The live online catalogue can be viewed in this link – https://machinerysales.cheffins.co.uk/auctions/info/id/1516/The-Jim-Russell-Collection-Auction-sale-of-Ferguson-Brown-Type-A-one-of-the-most-comprehensive-Ferguson-memorabilia-collections-

    Ripon Farm Services

    Ripon Farm Services

In this episode of Auction Torque, we go behind the scenes as one of the UK's biggest agricultural machinery dealerships, Ripon Farm Services, enlists the help of Cheffins to sell around 40% of its second hand machinery stock in one of the first dealer dispersal auctions of its type.
From its base at Ripon, Yorkshire, the dealership has rapidly expanded over the past five years, significantly increasing its machinery sales, and growing to run 14 depots from Newcastle to south Lincolnshire. The volume of used equipment coming into the dealership from new sale trade-ins has both space and financial implications, and an auction has been seen as an attractive route to market for this equipment.
We speak to Richard Gravill, Ripon's group used equipment manager, to tell us why now was the time to disperse of a wide range of machinery and why he thinks this type of sale will become a regular thing. We also get the thoughts of Oliver Godfrey, director at Cheffins, to why this novel way of selling a dealership's machinery stock will benefit the business. We will also preview some of the lots up for grabs in the auction.
The sale takes place on Thursday 30 March 2023 at Ripon Racecourse, with the lots sold in one ring beginning at 9am. There is a viewing day on 29 March 2023 between 10am-4pm.

    Cheffins Monthly Machinery Auctions

    Cheffins Monthly Machinery Auctions

In this episode of Auction Torque, we look at Cheffins' Monthly Machinery Auctions that are held at the sale ground in Sutton, near Ely and why they represent a great way of selling modern plant and machinery.
We speak to a Lincolnshire farmer that has recently sold two tractors through the Monthly Auctions and why this represented a better return than a dealer trade-in or selling privately. We also talk to Bill King and Joe Page from Cheffins about the history of the sale that has been running for more than 80 years, and how during that time it has been viewed all over the world with machinery shipped to more than 130 countries. It is now a must attend sale for contractors, dealers, farmers, and exporters alike.
