Being an artist is not a label, it is what one does. It is not a carefree, easy life devoid of responsibility. On the contrary. It is a high level of commitment to the work often accompanied with great sacrifice, uncertainty, doubt, and fear, yet do the work regardless. It is ceaseless dedication with the goal of creating works that move or inspire others. To the public eye it may seem glamorous however, it is 99% grind and 1% shine.
Based on excerpts from Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles and Ted Orland, we asked three committed, working artists from different fields some very profound questions covering topics of fear, doubt, insecurity, and limitations, etc. Their responses may be quite surprising.
