Another great one

Listen to now playing and thought I’d give this a shot as i had a gap to fill in my podcast listening and I’m a big John Carpenter fan but didn’t read these ESCAPE books. These boys have done it for me and it’s great. I do prefer when he has someone to bounce off from as he does in this series for sure. Give it a poke it’s worth it.

Addicted!

I absolutely love this podcast! The Now Playing team have a true talent for analysing the artistic and narrative nuances of modern fiction, and being able to find out the plot point developments of books by Stephen King and Arthur C Clarke, when life is often just too short to experience such heavy paperbacks first hand, is really delightful. Especially like it when Arnie contextualises the books of Stephen King by going over moments in the author's life which led the book in question being penned.

Only request would be "more episodes please!!"

It's a shame that you can't download earlier episodes, as I am pretty sure there used to be further reviews of books such as "Under The Dome" on here...

Keep em coming guys!! : )

The Long Walk

Enthusiastic speaker but I think he missed the point of The Long Walk.

It’s far more character led rather than plot led (because the plot is so simple and unflinching). The plot should have been covered in a few minutes to leave more time to talk about the characters. To say that there’s ‘too many characters’ is a weak assessment and seems to suggest that they just weren’t paying attention. I had zero issue following along with who was who.

This podcast also barely touched upon the complex relationship between McVries & Garraty. Nor does it mention any specific moments along the walk and hardly delved into any of the characters. So much to say about the likes of Hank Olsen (for example).

The walk itself can also be seen as a metaphor for life rather than just men being drafting into the Vietnam war.

Kudos to the parts where lines from the book were read out because they were read out well.

Overall, a bit of a frustrating listen.
