The truth about cicadas & Rock Hill hail storm [Ep. 490]

The truth about cicadas & Rock Hill hail storm [Ep. 490]

This week, WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich talks about two very important, and yet very different, topics: The cicada emergence and a destructive severe thunderstorm in Rock Hill, South Carolina. This year will have the return of two different broods of cicadas, the Periodical Cicadas, also known as Brood XIX or Brook 19. They return every 13 years and are expected here in the Carolinas.Elsewhere in the United States, Broox XIX, which returns every 17 years, is also returning.A lot of headlines are emphasizing this return of two different cicada broods with phrases like "cicada invasion" or "cicada apocalypse." Many news stories give the false impression that the two types of cicadas will be appearing at the same time.As Brad Panovich explains, unless you live in a few very specific locations, you are unlikely to experience both types of cicadas. (Of course, even just one type of cicada can be loud enough. Just as the people of Newberry County, South Carolina: https://www.wltx.com/article/news/local/cicadas-noise-complaints-newberry-county-south-carolina-bugs/101-d1dbb836-6a68-438a-8813-700d7a61e5f2)
Brad write's more about the cicadas here: https://www.wcnc.com/article/weather/weather-iq/millions-of-cicadas-return-after-13-years-in-the-next-few-weeks/275-b664824b-858a-43d6-b893-e5959771890eBrad also shares his eyewitness account of devastating storm damage in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A supercell thunderstorm impacted York County, South Carolina on April 20 with 90-mph winds and baseball-sized hail. Brad visited the neighborhoods hardest hit by the severe weather and talked with experts, including the National Weather Service and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) about what they saw.The thunderstorm, which was found not to have produced a tornado, produced the largest hail either Brad or the Carolina Weather Group's Frank Strait can recall ever seeing in the Carolinas. Frank, who is from Rock Hill, shares his thoughts on the severe weather damage left behind in his hometown.

Chasing storms: Inside the tornado outbreak of April 13, 2020 | Ep. 488

Chasing storms: Inside the tornado outbreak of April 13, 2020 | Ep. 488

Chris Jackson is a South Carolina-based storm chaser and a trained first responder. On April 13, 2020, he chased severe weather as it raced across his home state.

The early morning event was a continuation of what became known as the Easter tornado outbreak of 2020, which caused damage across much of the South before coming into the Carolinas.

In South Carolina, there were 5 EF-3 tornadoes, 2 EF-2 tornadoes, and 1 EF-1 tornado in Central South Carolina and East-Central Georgia, causing 2 fatalities and at least 7 significant injuries.

On this episode of the Carolina Weather Group podcast, Chris Jackson shares his story of chasing the storms, reporting tornado damage as a SKYWARN spotter, dialing 911 to alert authorities of an emergency, and rescuing a couple from their storm-ravaged home.

By the time the severe weather outbreak was over, Chris visited Williston, Neeses, Livingston, Estill, Nixville, and Walterboro, all in the state of South Carolina, to survey the storm damage. During the course of the tornado outbreak, the National Weather Service in Charleston, SC issued their first ever Tornado Emergency, which is the highest and most severe classification of a Tornado Warning.

A conversation about sea level rise [Ep. 487]

The Carolina Weather Group talks with Doug Marcy, Senior Coastal Hazards Specialist at NOAA Office for Coastal Management, about the threat of sea level rise. Doug and Shea discuss how a changing environment is causing our oceans to observe more heat, more water, and thus rise along the shorelines.

Becoming a Weather Ready Nation [Ep. 486]

This week we chat with NOAA's Doug Hilderbrand about how we can build safety and resiliency toward severe weather by becoming a Weather-Ready Nation. On April 3, join us for "Safe Place Selfie Day," when we'll be posting pictures to social media from our "safe place," the place we go at-work, at-home, or at-school to seek shelter during tornadoes and other severe weather.

Unlock earlier gardening with weather trends [Ep. 485]

Unlock earlier gardening with weather trends [Ep. 485]

Don't start gardening yet. Even though you can start gardening outdoors earlier this year in the Carolinas thanks to a change in the USDA's classification of Plant Hardiness Zones for North Carolina and South Carolina, we've got at least one more cold snap this week.

This week on the Carolina Weather Group, Candice Jordan hosts a special conversation with her colleague from the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Few the detailed and interactive USA Plant Hardiness Zone Map at https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/.

This episode was available early on https://patreon.com/carolinawxgroup

    North Carolina: https://www.weather.gov/rah/FrostFreezemaps
    South Carolina: https://www.dnr.sc.gov/climate/sco/ClimateData/SC_Frost_Freeze_Dates.pdf

USDA’s Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. Starting in 2024, the Carolinas were adjusted because of warming temperatures and rapidly increasing data sets.
