Baffled by the Review Criticising the Narrator’s Supposed ‘Ego’
This is a response to ‘Baker David’ regarding his bizarre interpretation of the podcast. Erm, I think you may be misunderstanding the entire concept of narration, if you cannot comprehend the notion that the first-person teller of a tale may have to refer to herself and her own activities. She ‘brings herself up at every opportunity’ because she is a main character in the tale and she wishes to accurately reflect how events unfolded. You seem to be completely confused about her role. I listened to this podcast in one sitting and, having also heard hundreds of others in the true crime genre, there is nothing about this particular narrator that remotely suggests arrogance. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Julia Robson is DIRECTLY INVOLVED in the events. She was the private investigator who tracked this individual for years. The podcast loosely follows a chronological structure detailing her efforts in apprehending the conman and we are given an insight into her mindset, which is extremely interesting. At no point did she descend into excessive self-interest or seem in any way arrogant. It was her stubborn refusal to give up that brought about this man’s imprisonment. If it weren’t for her efforts in tracking him down to New Zealand and arranging a sting operation, he would likely still be causing terrible emotional and financial damage. Heaven forbid a woman is actually able to specifically explain her part in tracking down a criminal and take credit for it! Julia did much of this at her own expense and victims like Vivian simply would not have seen this man in court and thereby gained a degree of closure, if it weren’t for her exertions.
I guarantee that a male narrator reciting their experiences as a private investigator in the same way would not abruptly be denounced as motivated by ego by a male listener. I think perhaps ‘Baker David’ needs to work on their own inherent prejudices, as they are clearly clouding their ability to listen to a podcast presented by a woman recounting a story in which she is inextricably entwined as a core character. That’s not ego - it’s the factual recollection of events.
Absolutely brilliant
What a fantastic story and brilliant investigative work
So much ego
A really great story, but wow the ego of the narrator was tedious. She brings herself up at every opportunity.
