Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future.

While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced.

Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you.

322: Kinesthetic learning in pre-K to 2nd grade with Walkabouts

322: Kinesthetic learning in pre-K to 2nd grade with Walkabouts

Walkabouts are on-demand adventures that transform math, language arts, and reading content into short, movement-rich activities for pre-K to 2nd grade students. Teachers report that Walkabouts help build students’ confidence, improve self-awareness, and enhance self-control. This evidence-based online curriculum supplement makes it easy for teachers and parents to create kinesthetic learning activities — fun lessons that bring key concepts to life through active learning techniques. Walkabouts are even correlated to the state standards (plus Head Start and NAEYC standards) teachers already use. Plus, unlike traditional videos or brain breaks, Walkabouts are dynamic and different each time they play. Watch as a Walkabout is created and played.
As a kinesthetic learner, Dr. Julian Reed - Walkabouts co-founder - remembers his active classes in school most fondly. He based Walkabouts on scientific research that proves kids who move more perform better academically. He hopes to kick start a new generation of children who stay active and learn at the same time.

321: Global Girl Project with Julia Lynch

Julia Lynch founded Global Girl Project in 2014, after over twenty years working as a Community Social Worker and Therapist. During this time Julia traveled extensively, including time spent in Tanzania and Jamaica providing community and health services to local at-risk communities. This work ignited her passion for supporting marginalized girls, and GGP was born. As a woman of colour who grew up in a small, white town Julia learned from an early age how imperative it is to see yourself represented in positions of power and leadership. Since that time, Julia has worked tirelessly to not only be a role model for her global girls, but to train them on how to be role models and leaders to others within their communities.
As the Founding Director, Julia works in partnership with NGOs and schools globally to implement and run leadership programs and initiatives for girls throughout the developing world. Julia not only works directly with our scholars online, but also runs the day-to-day operations of GGP from the United Kingdom.
Through GGP programming the impact in each local partner country has been evident. From an increase in self-confidence, leadership skills and self-perceived power and autonomy from the girls, to a shift in perception of gender roles and capabilities from local community members, the impact that is being created is truly global in scope.

318: Mountain Point Academy Accredited Online School

318: Mountain Point Academy Accredited Online School

Sara Busalacchi and Anjilee Ferguson have over a decade each of experience in the Online Education industry. Through their educational experiences they found a deep passion for helping others succeed and grow. Because of their passion they co-founded their online school, Mountain Point Academy, where they encourage students to embrace and foster the skills needed for lifelong learning.
Sara and Anjilee also share some similar passions outside of the school. They both have a love for the outdoors, music, and especially their families. Anjilee loves traveling to new places, and Sara loves jamming out with her band.
Mountain Point Academy’s mission is to commit to providing a student-centered academic experience by creating an environment grounded in respect, integrity, and commitment to learning. Students and staff work together as each student strives to reach his or her academic potential.
What does it mean to be student-centered? MPA operates under the belief that all students can learn, but the way that happens looks a little bit different for each student. William Spady says it perfectly when he states that, “All students can learn and succeed, but not on the same day in the same way.”  MPA works with all types of students; whether you love school and can’t wait to graduate high school early to get to college, or if you have struggled in the past and are looking for an alternative to your brick-and-mortar school, we have you covered!
Every student that enters our doors (figuratively of course!) is assigned an Academic Mentor. This MPA staff member acts as your advocate throughout your time at Mountain Point. You’ll never have to worry about who to turn to when you have a question on your homework, your graduation status, career planning, or anything else! Your mentor will contact you weekly to check in, set goals, and see how you’re doing. This human-to-human contact is what sets us apart from many other online schools.
