Brilliant and brave journalism
I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn’t listening to a historical documentary : the investigation, exposition and interviews are expertly put together, allowing the listener to understand the events, background and trajectory of the scenario.
I recommend this to anybody who wants to understand how state power can be harnessed to systematically dismantle the freedom of its citizens - depressingly familiar as it turns out : overly broad vague law justified in the name of security and stability, court systems with 99.9% conviction rates, citizens encouraged to denounce each other, schools used to disseminate the one-party government’s message, dawn-raids: the list goes on.
The uncomfortable reality is this is not a historical documentary about some previous dark time : this is all about 2019 up to and including the present day.
There is little doubt that this investigation involved a not-insignificant amount of bravery from the journalists and those willing to speak to them. (The fact that names are changed and actors are used to voice their words is one such tell).
I recommend this podcast.
