Approaches to supporting a weaning journey, with Katy Baker-Cohen

Approaches to supporting a weaning journey, with Katy Baker-Cohen

There are as many approaches to weaning as there are nurslings, so in this episode, I thought I’d get another perspective from an IBCLC across the pond. Katy Baker-Cohen works with the Nurse Family Partnership and has her own private practice called Crescent Lactation Care based in Pennsylvania. Together we talk about our approaches to transitioning from breastfeeding, how to talk about bed sharing, methods of night weaning, and which methods we don’t encourage for families choosing parent-le...

Tracey Chow-Seegoolam was already feeding her son Miles when she found out she was pregnant with three more babies. In our conversation, we talk about how Miles weaned during the pregnancy, where Tracey found support and advice for breastfeeding multiples, how she built up her supply through the hard work of triple feeding and pumping, and how she continues to feed Lewis, Felix and El...

Terri's story - night weaning and boundaries

Today, doula and peer supporter Terri Dell is sharing her breastfeeding story which ends with her night weaning her daughter Riley on attempt number 3. It’s a story that covers some early challenges but ends with a demonstration of how putting some boundaries in place, and getting to grips with nursing manners, can help a breastfeeding journey to continue. As Terri describes, she ‘fell back in love with breastfeeding’ once she started to look after her own needs in the nursing relationship.Te...

Another great episode

I listened to The Great Pretenders on my run this morning. Another great episode. I supported exactly such a (very sleepy) baby just yesterday. So much helpful information presented in an easy to digest way. It was good to know that I said most of this to the parents - you trained me well Kathryn! Thanks Emma - please keep them coming.

Just wonderful

Such a great support in weaning, so grateful someone is so dedicated to not just the start of breastfeeding but the end. Such an important conversation for those who choose to feed beyond the 1 yr mark. Found this podcast while trying to navigate weaning and what a resource it has been. Thank you Emma.

Awesome podcast!

I’m training as a peer supporter and love this podcast! Emma is personable, informative, and entertaining and she has a great range of topics, especially on weaning. I find that a lot of breastfeeding info online and social media focuses on establishing breastfeeding and the fourth trimester months, so it’s great to see information on the later stages of the breastfeeding journey. I’d love to see episodes on what to expect at specific ages, for example, an episode on 6-12 months, one on 12-24 months, and one that covers breastfeeding a 2 year old , 3 year old, 4 year old, etc. Thank you for making this podcast Emma!
