A first class interviewer with some great guests

Having just listened to a podcast with another consummate interviewer (James O’Brien’s Full Disclosure podcast) and seeing the same guest who I like very much on this podcast, I nonetheless, almost gave this episode a miss. I’m so glad I didn’t.

Unless one is a super-fan of a particular guest, or their story, one might be forgiven for not listening to every podcast featuring a guest doing their promotional rounds.

However Raynor is a likeable, talented interviewer - the conversational flow appears very natural - either the sign of a pro as Raynor is, or someone innately gifted in the role of interviewer. This is despite the foodie interruptions. I love food but this is my least favourite part of the podcast but understandably, it works to have a conceit for a podcast, plus the restaurant industry needs all the support it can get in Covid times.

The “repeat interviewee” I’d just heard is equally at home in the broadcast world so deserves credit for giving some fresh nuggets in this interview but I’ve enjoyed enough Out to Lunch episodes to appreciate the subtle guiding hand of a good interviewer and there were some timeless gems of wisdom and shared humanity in this episode that I’ve noted down for their sheer eloquence (again the interviewee deserves credit.)

There was only ever one audio-interview show/podcast where I used to listen to every interview regardless of who they were (Desert Island Discs); that’s sadly not the case any more. And this podcast is no different in that I don’t listen to guests I don’t know - my loss - possibly. But I’m glad there’s a suitably high proportion of guests I want to listen to and I miss this podcast when it’s on a break - so thank you and keep them coming.

A parting off-topic request - as a producer of podcasts and a journalist - Raynor can you please find a charismatic, intelligent female duo like Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes to have a weekly cultural commentary podcast echoing the format of their hit podcast The High Low. They’ve left a huge void in the podcasting world and it’s one that needs filling - I, like many I know, never missed an episode.

Love this

Love listening to these. Can’t wait for it to be in real restaurants again but they always make me hungry and require wine!
