Chris Smalls is Living Rent Free in Jeff Bezos' Head

Chris Smalls is Living Rent Free in Jeff Bezos' Head

What is it that makes a worker essential? This is the question that Chris Smalls and hundreds of thousands of Amazon workers had to ask as they found themselves working long hours in unsafe conditions at the height of the pandemic, having been deemed 'essential.' But when Chris, who was responsible for training thousands of other employees and upper management, organized a protest for better work conditions he was immediately terminated and told he wasn't articulate enough to be the face of efforts to unionize. Chris responded by pushing it further, creating the Congress of Essential Workers and, eventually, the Amazon Labor Union.

Chris joins Fredrik and Leilani to discuss the intense amount of work it took to create the union, the power of challenging the system as his authentic self, and proving those who underestimated him dead wrong.

Support the Amazon Labor Union. You can see more about Chris's fight to create the Amazon Labor Union in Fredrik's latest film, Breaking Social.

Unbalanced arguments & misleading information

I have only listened to episode 4 on Oatly and Blackstone but I will not be listening to any other episodes because much (not all) of the information in this episodes ranges from misleading to outright wrong.

For example, they led me to believe that Blackstone handed over $200m. This isn’t true. They gave most of that $200m but not all of it. There were a number of minority investors involved including Natalie Portman and Oprah who conveniently didn’t get mentioned.

They also said that there was no ‘good’ and ‘bad’ arm at Blackstone. This is not true. Oatly is funded by Blackstone Growth, who are a platform dedicated to impact investing focussing on Health & Wellbeing, Financial Access, Sustainable Communities and Green Technologies. There’s two points to make on this; from what I can tell, Blackstone Growth sits inside the private equity business (holds about 25% of Blackstone’s total funds) and then within that, its highly likely that Blackstone Growth will have a separate funding pot, separate management and potentially different investors (there will always be overlap of course). The people that are running the Blackstone Growth are not going to the same as the Blackstone Real Estate arm.

The other point I found really frustrating was this argument that PE houses don’t add value yet pull all the profits. This is utterly ridiculous. PE houses invest money to help a business grow, which in and of itself is adding value!!! Else there would be no profits to take?! And that’s not considering the operational and strategic support they will likely provide.

There are multiple other inaccuracies in this episode that I won’t list in the review. However if you want to found out more for yourself, do take a look at the Blackstone investors relation page which lays out a lot of information (and for those cynics among you, it’s going to be a regulatory requirement that the information laid out here is true).
