Bonus 7: The Last Dance of the Cuckoos with Andy Hollingworth and Matt Holt
On September 9th, 1953, Stan Laurel and Oliver ‘Babe’ Hardy arrived on a boat direct from the USA into the small harbour town of Cobh, Ireland, ahead of another tour of the theatres of Great Britain. The boys assumed that they would quietly disembark unnoticed by the townspeople - but that couldn’t be further from what happened. In this special bonus episode of the podcast, Patrick welcomes filmmakers Andy Hollingworth and
Matt Holt to discuss the genesis and production of their new documentary, The Last Dance of the Cuckoos, which charts this remarkable and emotive true story. In addition, Patrick invites his guests to share their earliest memories of Laurel and Hardy and also makes them face the Atoll Question.

5 star podcast
What a lovely podcast this is. When it ‘drops’ into my podcast library to listen to, there is an instant wave of joy knowing that when i press play I get taken to a world nearly 100 years ago and it’s a world of nothing but joy.
Great guests who have given the listeners so many extra nuggets of information that we didn't know before interspersed with really well edited clips or songs from their movies.
Patrick sir……you are doing a fine job here. You make what is probably a difficult and time consuming exercise looks easy. I have not noticed any sound level issues. Its a great listen when either commuting to and from work or generally pottering around the house.
I thought at the start that a podcast a month would take too long to get to some of my favourite films they have made but to have already got to double woopee….the speed is perfect!
When i finish a podcast which I am always completly up to date with then it makes me stick on a couple of films to watch……starting always with the one you have just reviewed.
Keep up the good work. You are making a lot of people very happy and pass on our thanks to your guests too who are all excellent.
Spencer
Well, here’s another nice podcast you’ve gotten me into!
How have I only just discovered this amazing podcast just a few months ago? Having been a Laurel and Hardy since I was a kid in the early 80s, this is just what the doctor ordered (the same doctor who said I might have hydrophosphates). Patrick’s enthusiasm for his subject matter shines through every delightful minute of these deep dives into each of the Boys’ films. His guests are the crème de la crème of Laurel and Hardy expertise, and the pace is always relaxed, allowing the experts to chat on and off topic in as much depth as they like, exploring every nook and cranny of each film and thus ensuring their insights are preserved for posterity. His exploration of the silents has reawakened an interest in these films for me, which I have to admit, I’ve neglected in the past. Patrick and his guests have accompanied me on many a long journey or walk this year, making the hours simply fly by, and I still have lots of episodes to catch up on and look forward to. Keep up the amazing work. I’ll be with you until Atoll K!
A great listen!
This podcast has reminded me how much I love the wonderful Laurel and Hardy! I listened to the Big Business one and now have started from number 1. Well researched and presented with infectious enthusiasm. A real treat!
