Politics of Twitter Verzuz Jamaal Bowman

Politics of Twitter Verzuz Jamaal Bowman

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum take a look at the democratic primary race between progressive Jamaal Bowman and moderate George Latimer. The race was the most expensive House primary race in US history for ad buys…but it’s more than just AIPAC money that impacted the outcome. Angela challenges the divide between Democrats and the group has some analysis that the mainstream missed.

Then, it’s OFFICIAL—social media can be bad for you. As if we didn’t know! The Department of Health and Human Services issued new social media health guidelines for kids, while the Surgeon General called for social media to come with a warning label, like cigarettes. But how necessary are these measures, really?

In Politics Are Everywhere, X, formerly known as Twitter, announced a distribution deal with Verzuz, which was created by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland.  Folks were outraged at the pictures of Swizz and Timabland hanging out with Elon Musk and that the announcement came out Juneteenth. Did they sell out or is it Elon who’s getting played OR a little more nuanced??

Stick around for a SPICY conversation at the end of the show. Tiffany brings us news from Kenya, where the self-described Gen Z’ers have stormed Kenya’s parliament in protest of a highly unpopular tax bill. President Ruto has since conceded to the protestors’ demands and vetoed the bill. Tiffany finds parallels between the young people protesting in Kenya and our own youth-led protests here in the states, while Andrew hears echoes of another set of protestors.

With the weather heating up, it’s a nice time to remind folks that the Summer EBT program is in full swing. You can find out how to get your SUN bucks at the USDA website.

And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFan listeners. We are 131 days away from the election. Welcome home y’all!

Why Should We Care About the 12th Amendment and Trump’s VP Pick? | MiniPod

Why Should We Care About the 12th Amendment and Trump’s VP Pick? | MiniPod

On this week’s MiniPod hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum try to have a conversation about who Trump will pick for Vice President… They end up nerding out with esteemed brother, writer, and attorney Elie Mystal about the 12th amendment.

Yet again, a little known legal rule could have a huge impact on the outcome of the election, and the future of the country.

    From Poles to Polls

    From Poles to Polls

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum share the results of our NLP Election Poll. Y’all responded in FORCE! 336 people took part in our poll, which is more than some national polls. Thank  you, NLP Fam!! Our poll shows slightly different results on the attitudes of Black voters, maybe because we actually polled Black people…

You can check out an overview of our poll at this link.

In Politics Are Everywhere, Nunsense (Tiff’s word) Addition–a Texas Democrat running for County Commissioner has been caught acting a FOOL! Taral Patel was arrested for sending himself fake racist messages on social media, messages that he put together in a collage and shared with his supporters. You can’t make up this NUNSENSE.

Speaking of nunsense, the Biden campaign just spent $50 million on a new ad that Angela thinks may have missed the mark. She’ll offer some free advice on how to make an effective ad while Tiffany and Andrew debate if the ads matter at all.

And in more important news, Tiffany catches us up on the most severe war-related humanitarian crisis in the world. No, it’s not Gaza. It’s Sudan, where millions of Sudanese people have been displaced and are at risk of famine. Surprised? Well, we’re not surprised that you’re surprised, because news from the continent is so under-covered!!

    Support Sudan at this link.

And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFan listeners. We are 138 days away from the election. Welcome home y’all!

Do Black Dads Matter? | MiniPod

Do Black Dads Matter? | MiniPod

We all have had stories about Black fathers—some of them remarkably negative from absenteeism to battles with child support and numerous “baby mamas.” On this week’s MiniPod, however, cohost Andrew Gillum, wants to challenge the narrative with facts. According to the CDC, Black fathers are more likely to be involved in activities with their children compared to white and Hispanic fathers AND ANDREW IS ONE OF THEM!  Angela Rye and Tiffany Cross join Andrew in sharing their own experiences and memories of their fathers while also discussing the challenges, myths and misconceptions of Black fatherhood.

What the Media Got Wrong About Hunter Biden

What the Media Got Wrong About Hunter Biden

Hunter Biden was found guilty for marking on an application that he was neither an addict nor a drug abuser on an application for a firearm he owned briefly. He’s facing a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The case calls into question the “wisdom” of our current Attorney General and puts a spotlight on an issue too many of us are familiar with: the criminalization of addiction.

This week Tiffany Cross has just come back from Côte d’Ivoire with stories and insights to share with co-hosts, Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum. Tiffany’s trip made her think: are Black folks in the states always checking what they’re saying, doing—even WEARING—to cater to white folks?

The Supreme Court will make decisions on a number of consequential cases this summer, including access to abortion pills, regulation of social media sites, and whether Trump is immune from prosecution for crimes committed in office. Watch out y’all, the activist court is ready to trash more of our rights.

And in Politics Are Everywhere, soccer star Vinícius Júnior conquered racism if even for a moment after three Spanish fans who hurled racist insults at him during a soccer match in 2023 were sentenced to 8 months in prison. It marks the first ever conviction in Spain for racial abuse at a soccer match. Vinícius responds to the conviction on Twitter, “I am a tormentor of racists.”  And we are here for THAT torment!!

Of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFam.

Trump Justice for Everyone? | MiniPod

Trump Justice for Everyone? | MiniPod

On this week’s MiniPod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum and Tiffany Cross continue their discussion of Trump’s privileged treatment by the justice system. Certainly OUR justice system is much less forgiving. So should the system work for everyone like it works for Trump??

And they have some words of caution for Democrats celebrating Trump’s conviction by gleefully labeling him a “felon.”
