There is a strong tendency these days to want to go online and look up the meaning of the aspects in your chart. "Hmmm... I have Venus trine Mars and Saturn square Mercury. Let's see what that means."

The problem with this is that to truly understand what that means you have to interpret the aspect as it occurs in your, or any other individual's own unique chart. To do this it is important to get a feel for the basics so that you know them the way an artist knows their colours. Then you can view the planets more like living beings and explore the meaning of your aspects in a unique "real time" kind of way. A cookie cutter approach to figuring out your chart will give you a long list of contradictory personality traits but it won't make your soul come alive to you.
