(#015) Midwinter in Antarctica - Waiting for the Sun

Midwinter Day - It's the only holiday in the world that’s celebrated across an entire continent by every person who lives there, and it's happening in Antarctica right now.

In the deepest, darkest part of the yar, Antarcticans look for ways to see the light at the end of the tunnel - a big deal when you haven’t seen the sun for a few months.

In this episode of Antarctica Did That For Me, we (your hosts, Keri Nelson and Cassa Grant) give you a snapshot of the Midwinter tradition and celebration, including the history of midwinter celebrations in Antarctica, the importance of the holiday for winterovers, and the traditions and themes associated with the holiday celebrated by all Antarctic bases across the continent.

It’s a celebration of challenges faced, fears overcome, and appreciation for possibilities, and it can help us shape our own holiday celebrations in the “real” world.

(#014) Weird Things We Brought to Antarctica

(#014) Weird Things We Brought to Antarctica

From bagpipes to jello to cedar shingles… in this episode of Antarctica Did That For Me, we (your hosts Keri Nelson and Cassa Grant)  discuss the weirdest things that we and other Antarcticans have brought to the ice.

People bring a variety of items to Antarctica to make their stay more comfortable and enjoyable. We’ve categorized them into themes- here’s a sneak peek: "The winner of this category was not just one, not two, but THIRTY Santa suits."

What do all these objects have in common? They might be funny or interesting, but they really highlight the creativity and uniqueness of the community that travels to and works in Antarctica.

The items brought to Antarctica reflect the individual personalities and interests of the Antarcticans, creating a unique and vibrant community on the ice.

And WHY do people bring these kinds of items? Comfort? Boredom? Aspiration? We have a few theories…

Which of us will say, "I always had my silver cape."? You’ll have to listen to find out…

(#013) Mental Health and Antarctica Winters

Five months of total darkness… the same people day in and day out… no fresh food for six months…

    Antarctic winters are no joke.

But one of the scariest things about signing up to spend a winter in Antarctica is considering what it might do to your mental health.

In this episode of Antarctica Did That For Me, we (your hosts Keri Nelson and Cassa Grant) discuss how we personally managed our mental health during the winters we spent in Antarctica.

We’ll share our thoughts and experiences going into our first winters, the challenges we faced, and the strategies we used to stay mentally healthy as we could.

(#012) Everywhere There's Signs - Sign Culture in Antarctica

(#012) Everywhere There's Signs - Sign Culture in Antarctica

If you've heard that lyric "signs signs, everywhere there's signs", that's no less true for the 7th continent. You can get away from the world when you work in Antarctica, but you can't get away from signs.

Antarctica's vibrant sign culture includes official signs, instructional signs, community signs and more, creating a cacophony of words and instructions for Antarctica residents.

In this episode of Antarctica Did That For Me, we (your hosts, Keri Nelson and Cassa Grant) discuss the sign culture in Antarctica, where signs teach us, admonish us and entertain us. They play a crucial role in our temporary community as they lay out rules and regulations, and community-generated signs let the creativity and humor of Antarctican residents shine.

Meanwhile, Keri and Cassa are looking for metaphysical signs in their lives all the time - are you? Join us as we reflect on the importance of paying attention to signs in life and following our intuition as we all try to create lives that we love.

(#010) Things I Know How to Do Now Because of Antarctica

(#010) Things I Know How to Do Now Because of Antarctica

Have you ever thought you knew what an experience was going to bring, and then turned out to be WAY off?

Going to Antarctica for the first time, there were things we both thought we “knew” about what to expect… but we never expected the unique skills we’d build from being “on ice.”

In this episode, we (your hosts, Keri Nelson and Cassa Grant) discuss the unexpected skills and knowledge we gained while working in Antarctica.

These skills varied from the wacky things we didn't expect to do, like learning to play music and handling penguins for research… to driving unique vehicles like Ivan the Terra Bus and Zodiacs, understanding weather patterns, and observing marine mammals.

We’ve found that skills acquired in Antarctica can be valuable in other contexts, like project management, communication, and persuasion, which are all critical skills in a remote environment like Antarctica.

What unexpected skills have YOU built over the years? And how do they help you today? This episode is a chance for you to see your progress and appreciate how far you’ve come.
