Stop Talking! - How to Master Communication Skills

Stop Talking! - How to Master Communication Skills

What if I told you the best way to develop and master communication skills is to shut up and stop talking? Although this may sound counter-intuitive, it’s not… and that is exactly why the vast majority of people are not great communicators.

I’m a big student of communication, quickly sparking connection and building strong relationships. I’ve been consuming any content I can on the topic, modeling those who I view as master communicators, and diligently practicing the skills.

Although I’m far from a master, I’m definitely light-years further than when I started. Having communication as a skill has had a massive positive impact on my life and continues to payoff each and every day.

Interested in investing in yourself and your future by studying communication skills? Curious how to form connections with others in a matter of seconds and develop deep relationships in days?

Here are some of my learning to help you start mastering communication.

    Take notes. :)

Avoid the Trap of Reactive Time Management

Avoid the Trap of Reactive Time Management

Are you living on other people’s time and not even knowing it.

There are two different approaches to how to spend your time: reactive and proactive. Reactive time is where your focus is (involuntarily) being pulled to a particular area. Proactive time is when you are in control of where you spend your focus and work to block out distractions.

Your day-to-day is likely a mix of both, however, with technology and crafty marketers you likely have slipped into a reactive dominated world.

You’re jumping at the latest email, tweet, message or notification. You’re finding yourself getting sucked into unproductive 15-20 minute blocks on facebook. You’re living in the short-term moment by moment and finding it hard to stay focused on big tasks and long-term ideas.

    Sound familiar?

In this Keyy.io Bite-Sized Bit we take a deeper look at the two forms of time management and how you can switch from reactive to proactive and regain your time and life. Listen on.

Triggering Deep Thought: My New Favorite Technique for Thinking Deep

Triggering Deep Thought: My New Favorite Technique for Thinking Deep

When do you have your best ideas? In the middle of the night? In the shower? While walking to, or from, work? I’d venture to guess that your best ideas often come when you least expect it and while your mind is free, clear and wondering like a child through a toy store.

A better question to ask is, “How can we create the circumstances to trigger a deeper thinking state of mind and get new ideas flowing?” … let’s talk about that for a few minutes.

If you’re like me a few years ago, your day is a shit-storm of action items, meetings and to do lists. Your brain is focused on what needs to get done by the end of the day, end of the week and and of the month. You’re buried in the weeds and your mind is stuck in surface-level, short-term thinking.

Although the day-to-day is important, we can’t let it consume our entire thought pattern or we will end up running full-speed, with our eyes close and with no destination in mind. Not ideal.

    Deep thinking is critical.
Whether focused on your personal life, a relationship or challenge at work, you have the need to slip your mind into deeper thinking in order to think bigger, deeper and more creatively.

Over the last two years I’ve created and refined various habits, rituals and activities to help pull myself into deeper thought. In today’s “Keyy.io Bite-Sized-Bit” I break down one of my newest and favorite activities I use to trigger deep thought.

    Listen on...

Picking Books is like Picking Music - [how to choose when to read which books]

Picking Books is like Picking Music - [how to choose when to read which books]

For years I hated reading. Absolutely hated it.

Through-out middle and high school I just couldn’t understand how anyone could like reading. I was a much more hands-on, let’s get our hands dirty creating something type of guy. I saw reading as simply a waste of time that pulled me away from the real world.

Oh how this was a mistake. Looking back, the number one piece of advice I would tell my younger-self is to heavily invest your time in reading and absorbing other’s knowledge.

Now an avid reader (reading a book a week - learn how), I’ve discovered the power of books. Books give you the ability to absorb another person’s years of knowledge (and avoid some of the problems) in the matter of a few hours. Reading is one of the best ways to accelerate your life and mind.

With that being said… a year ago I was struggling.

I was still struggling from time-to-time to jump into or continue reading certain books. I’d pick them up and find my brain wondering around missing what was being said. I just wasn’t into it and often ended up stalling out completely.

Around that same time I started thinking about how and why we choose the music we listen to. The more I thought about it, the more parallels I started to draw between picking music and picking books. Then a lightbulb went off and I was immediately able to overcome my “readers-block”.

In this bite-sized bit we are going to talk about how to pick which books to read when and how to balance over-reading vs. putting concepts into actual practice. In the additional resources, I’ve also listed my personal, hand-selected books I’d highly recommend. Enjoy.
