    The Foundation Matters (audio)

    The Foundation Matters (audio)

24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”  28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, - Matthew 7:24-28 (NLT)

46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” - Luke 6:46-49 (NLT)

    1.  Listen to God's Word

    Listen personally

Let me hear of Your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting You.  Show me where to walk, for I give myself to You. - Psalm 143:8*

    Listen publicly

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep His promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near.  Hebrews 10:23-25*

    Listen purposefully

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17*

    Listen passionately

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.  - Psalm 63:1

As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you,  O God.  - Psalm 42:1

    2.  Do what it says

“But don’t just listen to God’s Word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”  - James 1:22

If you love me, obey my commandments.   - John 14:15

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.  And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. -  Deut. 6:5-6

Do it with the right heart

    Proverbs 3:5-6

    -Motivated by love

    -Carried out with joy

Do it in the right mind

    -Surrounded by peace

    -Driven with patience

    Do it in His name

-Completed with kindness, gentleness and self-control

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.  No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. - Matthew 5:14-16*

    Lessons about Wealth (audio)

    Lessons about Wealth (audio)

8 If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them. 9 But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields. 10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.   11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes?12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep. 13 There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. 15 As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? 17 Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger.  18 Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. 19 Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.  - Ecclesiastes 5:8-20 (ESV)

The Preacher Teaches 6 Important Lessons about Wealth:

    1. Injustice, financial or otherwise, will be met by God’s justice (5:8).

8 If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them.  - Ecclesiastes 5:8 (ESV)

    2. Do not expect to be satisfied with more wealth (5:10-11).

10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? - Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 (ESV)

    3. Wealth can destroy (5:13-17).

- Ecclesiastes 5:15-19 (ESV)

    4. Wealth can be fleeting (5:14).

14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. - Ecclesiastes 5:14 (ESV)

    5. Wealth is granted to be enjoyed (5:18-20).

-Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (ESV)

    6. Wield wealth to produce rather than to simply keep (5:9).

9 But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields.  - Ecclesiastes 5:9 (ESV)

    Approaching God (audio)

    Approaching God (audio)

1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. 2  Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. 3 For a dream comes with much business, and a fool's voice with many words.  4 When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. 6 Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? 7 For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear.  Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 (ESV)

    Approaching God rightly requires that:

    1. We listen intently (5:1)

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.  -  Ecclesiastes 5:1 (ESV)

    2. We speak sparingly (5:2-3)

Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. 3 For a dream comes with much business, and a fool's voice with many words.  - Ecclesiastes 5:2-3 (ESV)

    3. We obey directly (5:4-7)

When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Ecclesiastes 5:4-7 (ESV)

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.  Matthew 5:33-37 (ESV)

    Proverbs of the Pastor (audio)

    Proverbs of the Pastor (audio)

4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. 5 The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh. 6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind. 7 Again, I saw vanity under the sun: 8 one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,  “For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business. 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?   12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. 13 Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice. 14 For he went from prison to the throne, though in his own kingdom he had been born poor.  15 I saw all the living who move about under the sun, along with that youth who was to stand in the king's place. 16 There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind. - Ecclesiastes 4:1-16

    A Wise Preacher’s Guidance:

    1. The Preacher warns, "Watch out for envy" (4:4-6).

4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. 5 The fool folds his hands and eats his own flesh. 6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.  Ecclesiastes 4:4-6 (ESV)

    2. The Preacher instructs, "Don’t go at life alone" (4:7-12).

    Ecclesiastes 4:7-12 (ESV)

    3. The Preacher warns, ”Don’t ever lose teachability" (4:13-16).

Ecclesiastes 4:13-16 (ESV)

    Application Questions:

    1. Is there something I want more than I want Jesus?

    2. Am I “leaning in” to the relationships Jesus has placed around me?

    3. Am I “reaching out” to the those who might be lonely near me?

    4. Am I remaining teachable by Jesus and others?

Baptism Sunday and the Blessing of the Ascension (audio)

Baptism Sunday and the Blessing of the Ascension (audio)

50 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God. - Luke 24:50-53 (ESV)

Theme: The ascension of Jesus equips us until His return.

5 Ways Jesus Equips us in His Ascension:

    1. The ascension equips us through encouragement (2:51).

    2. The ascension equips us to worship (2:52).

    3. The ascension equips us to believe (Matthew 28:17).

”And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.“ - Matthew 28:17 (ESV)

    4. The ascension equips us to obey (Matthew 28:19-20).

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”  Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)

    5. The ascension equips us to persevere (Acts 1:11).

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will

come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”  Acts 1:11 (ESV)

Easter Sunday and the Power of the Resurrection (audio)

Easter Sunday and the Power of the Resurrection (audio)

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.  18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.  21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.*

    Luke 24:13-35 (ESV)

    The Resurrection

    1. The resurrection proves Jesus meets us where we are (24:13-15).

    2. The resurrection means that Jesus will always confront us with truth (24:25-27).

    3. The resurrection promises that Jesus changes us (24:30-34).
