The Incomparable History Of Ireland Lauren

- History
Ireland has been inhabited mythically for 33,000 years with the first humans arriving about 10,000 years ago. Known as the Neolithic and Megalithic period, humans used small stone tools, and polished and crafted with points and attached to antlers, bone or wood to serve as spears and arrows. They often lived nomadically in camps by rivers and bodies of water.
The Ancient Greeks called Ireland The Ancient Island! Ireland has 70% of Europe's rock art. The megalithic structures have many stories and New Grange is older than the pyramids and Stonehenge. These residents of Ireland were observers of the night sky who understood cosmic patterns. Irish Mythology has magical journeys to the Otherworld, stories of Irish heroes like Cú Chulainn, tales of monsters and time-travel that inspired Tolkien Lords of the Rings as well as the books of C.S. Lewis. A whole world of amazing stories are waiting for you!https://www.facebook.com/ClanNaGaelDEhttps://www.irishrosegiftshop.com/

Bobby Sands rose to international prominence in 1981 when he embarked on a fatal hunger strike while imprisoned for activities related to the IRA’s armed campaign against the British government.
Sands’s rough childhood, which included several assaults by unionist paramilitaries and local Protestant gangs, led to his decision to volunteer for the IRA in 1972. Sands was arrested twice, the first time for weapons possession, in 1972, and imprisoned at Long Kesh as a “special category” prisoner due to his involvement with the IRA. The special category status acknowledged a sort of political status and granted those prisoners the right to wear their own clothing. When these privileges were taken away and seen as criminals they started several protest to get them back. When Margaret Thatcher would not budge, he died at the age of 29 and 9 others would follow.

Hunger Strike History Part 1

Hunger Strike is an old Celtic tradition going back to the Brehon Laws. It was how you publicly displayed your desire for restitution for wrongs done against you. The first time it was used as political protest was in 1913 by James Connolly. In May of 1981 the young prisoners who died on hunger strike changed the history and the direction of Northern Ireland in the decades that followed their deaths.

An Gorta Mor/The Great Hunger part 1
Send us a Text Message.
An Gorta Mor, the great hunger of 1845-1852. All over Ireland's landscape there are ruins and grave yards that bear testimony to this horrific period in the World's history. Mass graves and heaps of moss-covered stones that use to be thriving villages dot the countryside. Historians cannot agree to the number that died but estimates range between 1-3 million. The debate continues about what Britain’s intent was when they exasperated the situation. In this episode I bring to you information you probably didn't know.
Slaves in America sent help
The Choctaw Indians who suffered on the Trail or Tears sent help
Britain’s navy tried to block aid with their ships
Queen Victoria discouraged donations
England exported 100s of 1000s of tons of food that could have prevented the deaths
English landlords were evicting starving people when they couldn't pay their taxes
Leading up to the famine, England weakened and impoverished the country so much it was ripe for a disaster of magnitude of the Great Hunger
