Our Culture, Our History with Jamaican Youth and Jamaican Historians. #TalkUpYout

Our Culture, Our History with Jamaican Youth and Jamaican Historians. #TalkUpYout

Our History! Listen to one of the most informative radio sessions with the Youth of Jamaica and special guests Professor Verene Shepherd and Steven Golding.

It is often said that Jamaica is losing its culture. Our people fondly remember the days of gathering as a family and even as a community to share what food we had with others, talk about the day’s news and tell duppy story fi di pickney dem. Those days have been replaced with children coming home to an empty house, eating foreign cereal while watching foreign cartoons on TV and surfing the net. No face to face human interaction, no communication.

But we the youth want to know our history, we want to connect with our culture, and we are dissatisfied with the lack of available information so we’re going to experts, the griots and we’re gathering like our foreparents did to hear the stories of our history and of our culture. Jack Mandora, wi nuh choose nuttn but fi wi kulcha!

Respect Patois with #TalkUpYout on Talk Up Radio-Learn Jamaican

Respect Patois with #TalkUpYout on Talk Up Radio-Learn Jamaican

Have some fun learning Jamaican Patois with our young people. Showing patois some love and respect. For most of us, Patois is the first language we hear and thus it becomes our first language. Its descriptive nature influences our imaginations and makes us colourful, vibrant people.

Patois Definition: the dialect of a particular region, especially one with low status in relation to the standard language of the country.

Creole Definition: a creole language, or simply a creole, is a type or classification of language; in particular, a creole is a stable, natural language that has developed from a pidgin (i.e. a simplified language or simplified mixture of languages used by non-native speakers) that over time has become nativized by children as their first language, with the accompanying effect of a fully developed vocabulary and system of grammar.

Jamaican Patois: known locally as Patois (Patwa or Patwah) and called Jamaican Creole by linguists, is an English-based creole language with West African influences (a majority of loan words of Akan origin) spoken primarily in Jamaica and the Jamaican diaspora.
