    First generation students

    First generation students

Cathy is back with new series of student podcasts! For the NewCL project, Coskun Guclu – a first generation students – has conducted research interviews to find out the experiences of first generation students at UCL, including the obstacles they face, the joys of being a first generation student and whether we should even call them that. In this episode, Cathy and Coskun discuss the findings and introduce the podcast series.

In this episode, Coskun talks to Catarina Lomelino and Laura Fisher about their experiences of being students and the importance of thinking about being a first generation student in the wider context of privilege and disadvantage. Cathy also pops up at the end because she cannot quash her unbearable need to editorialise.

If you are curious, UCL Widening Participation offer support to students who are disadvantaged on a range of different dimensions: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/widening-participation/eligibility-criteria. Being a First Gen student is not enough on its own to qualify for extra support, but as we hear on the show, there are nevertheless some obstacles faced by all First Gen students, no matter how privileged or disadvantaged they may be on other grounds.

    The JewCL Podcast

    The JewCL Podcast

In this – the first episode of the JewCL podcast – Cathy, Laura, Manya and Sarai introduce themselves and talk about why it's called the JewCL podcast (apart from the obvious – that it's about Jews and we're at UCL). We explain our research project and then we discuss what our interviewees told us about what it's like to come out as Jewish and some of the remarks that make it tricky.

In the JewCL podcast, three Jewish students and their teacher chat about their research project into Jewish life at UCL, what they discovered, how they discovered it and what they think about it all.

This show is presented by Cathy Elliott, Manya Eversley, Laura Katan and Sarai Keestra. It is produced and edited by Sarai Keestra, Laura Katan and Manya Eversley.

We are grateful to the Arena Centre for Research-Based Education and Liberating the Curriculum at UCL, especially Teresa McConlogue and Mira Vogel, for giving us the idea and a small grant to do the research.

The podcast would not have been possible without the help of Dave Pickering. You should listen to his podcasts The Family Tree (co-produced with Jen Adamthwaite) and Getting Better Acquainted.

Thanks also to the Department of Political Science for letting Cathy spend time on the project.

    Talking About Israel

    Talking About Israel

In this episode, Cathy, Manya, Sarai and Laura talk about some of the difficulties that come up for Jewish students when talking about Israel on campus, as well as the problems of making assumptions. It's a tricky conversation in places and we are reflective about that towards the end of the episode.
