We had a deep and joyful talk with Junior Soma from Made in Germany Podcast. This episode can be summarized as the power of listening. Because the way he listens creates magic in this space!
Why do we interview Junior Soma?
Normally Education is associated with school or universities. But nowadays if we think of adult education or life learning--which can happen any time and anywhere, then education is also about personality development, maturation, broadening of horizons and overcoming prejudices. In this sense for me Made in Germany Podcast is an informal educational space at least for three reasons:
First, Made in Germany Podcast gives space to people who don't have space to talk, who have unpopular ideas and biographies. This is already learning for most of the people in Germany who hear such voices for the first time.
Secondly, people with similar biographies like the guest, see in them a role model--someone who has achieved something in the same conditions as they have grown up or live today, so they get empowered and motivated.
And the space itself is a decolonized space where people are threatened with respect, kindness. Junior Soma’s understanding, eye level and empathy towards guests and listeners creates a pleasant atmosphere of giving and taking which is the way how we in education enable growth. This is a condition people need to flourish. I dont think someone who does not have an attitude like Junior’s could motivate guests in this way to share so authentically and to open up!

Our guest is Dr. Marlene Schäfers Marlene Schäfers is a social anthropologist and holder of a Newton International Fellowship awarded by the British Academy. Her research focuses on the impact of state violence on intimate and gendered lives, the politics of death and the afterlife, and the intersections of affect and politics. She specializes in the anthropology of the Kurdish regions and modern Turkey. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge and was Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Middle East and North Africa Research Group at Ghent University, Belgium.

Episode 4:
In this episode, I want to make an exception by inviting a musician to a space normally offered to educators. 
Our guest is Michael Perry. Michael Perry is an Antiguan-Canadian Pop/R&B recording artist and songwriter. Besides his identity as a musician, Michael is teaching English to kids through music. And this is where we will also talk about his teaching identity.
Throughout his life, he has learned from different people. Beginning from an early age with his grandmother’s love for singing and music and his mother’s steady support, to encouraging teachers in school; Singing teachers and collaboratively learning with other artists. 
In this way, Michael’s journey through and with music, the constant learning and unlearning, has been and still is inspired by not only formal teaching institutions but also through less formal ways – the unplanned or unstructured that we would in everyday life not necessarily term education or teaching. 
I want to make this visible; how we are all always somehow involved in education on multiple levels.

The topic of this episode was planned to be discrimination and education as well as the overlapping issues, like identity, gender, sexuality and migration. The topic moved slightly into the topic of racism and education. I have talked to Ray Shami.  He is an Syrian - Canadian expert in this field.  We have touched many topics including the most important one; the tragic death of George Floyd, an innocent black man who was killed by a policeman in front of public eye.  Ray will tell us about his journey all the way from Syria at the age of 16 and his work from being educator, artist, trainer, and now employment councillor and Coach. From his experience till how to empower people, especially queer people of colour, we had a good exchange on all the elements which are or should belong to education. Now you will hear the conversation between me and Ray, and I hope you will get inspiration and motivation. Ray has a great energy. I had chance to work with him 2 years ago in the topic of Human Rights in Weimar at the European Youth Educational Center.
