Canada continued its first steps into the 20th century this year. Mona Parsons, a hero of the Second World War was born, as was hockey legend Lionel Conacher, geologist George Dawson died and Marconi ushered in the age of radio.

Canada moved into the 20th century and it was a very important year. It saw the Battle of Paardeberg in the Boer War, the birth of future Governor General Roland Michener, an explosion at Welland Canal and the Great Hull Fire that destroyed much of Hull and Ottawa.

The last year of the 19th century saw the birth of Chief Dan George and John Tootoosis, two of the most influential Indigenous men of the 20th century. The year was also the year of a terrible fire in Dawson City, the Boer War continued and Treaty 8 was signed.
