    Jhana Meditation

    Jhana Meditation

Jhana Meditation is the form of meditation that the Buddha practiced prior to his awakening and throughout his career.

Jhana meditation concentrates the mind. Simply put one focuses on the breath, the body breathing, the relaxation in the breath, the pleasure of the relaxation, etc... Most simply put, how can I make the breath even more comfortable? As we learn to make the breath more comfortable, the mind concentrates, and the body becomes increasingly relaxed and becomes a better container for a clear mind.

Jhana meditation leads to states of absorption where the sense of self falls away and "boundless" states can be experienced. It is very good for the beginning meditator because of how it calms the mind and body.

The practice comes to us through Mantak Chia and is thought to support physical and spiritual health. Included here is a description of the practice, a bit of the practice's lineage, and a story of how the practice can be powerfully affective.

Discussion with Emily Shurr on Thursday July 23, 2020, Part I.

Mark Johnson and Emily Shurr in discussion about Deproblemation and how it relates to the problem of suicide. How to relate to suicidal ideation both as an aspirant with trauma on a spiritual path and as a healing professional? The conversations returns several times to Buckminster Fuller who said: “You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.”
