「べつに。もらっても使いみちがないよ、ぼくには」

關口は残念そうに言うと、ぼくに団地ぐらしの話を始めた。

I said, "No, I don't need it. I have no use for it.

Sekiguchi said regretfully and began to talk to me about his life in the apartment complex.

同僚のお幸ちゃんや客にからかわれながら。

その時、黒い服の背の高い老婆が現れた。料理を三品届けてくれ、と。

届け先は、北村。お菊さんの待ち人であった。

お菊さんは出前番だったので、岡持ちをもって店を出た。

Okiku-san, a waitress, is waiting for a customer to arrive.

She was being teased by her colleague, Sachi, and the customers.

At that moment, a tall old woman in black appeared. She asked him to deliver three dishes.

The recipient was Kitamura. She was waiting for Okiku-san.

Okiku-san was on delivery duty, so she left the restaurant with the food.

朗読「最小人間の怪 ―人類のあとを継ぐもの―」海野十三

亡くなったN博士から聞いた話である。

大正十五年十二月二十六日の昼間、霧島の山中において、前代未聞の妖怪に出会った。

それはふしぎにも人間の形をしたものであった。が、人間ではない。背丈が二三センチに過ぎなかった。

ピンセットで採集しようとすると、微小人間は大きな声を出して抵抗した。

I heard this story from the late Dr. N.

During the daytime of December 26, 1926, in the mountains of Kirishima, he encountered an unprecedented monster.

It was a mysterious human-shaped creature, but it was not a human. But it was not human. It was only a few centimeters tall.

When I tried to collect it with tweezers, the microscopic human resisted with a loud voice.

ジャンは雲の中でイライラしながら待ち続けた。

新盆だというのに、自分には何の音沙汰もない。

ぼくがフランス人だからか、それとも自殺だからか？

ここは彼岸なのはまちがいない。

なら、ここにいるぼくに、なぜその彼岸のルールが適用されないのか。

「ジャン」と、鳩（に似た鳥）はいった。「お前にも新盆がきた。かえるがよい」

I am sure that this is the other shore.

Jean," said the pigeon (a bird similar to a pigeon). The new year has come for you, too. Go back to your home.

私がマックス・プランツ研究所にロレンス博士をたずねたのは、数年前の早春のある日である。

博士は、動物本能の――正確には、動物の内因性行動に関しての、世界的な権威である。

たぶん、博士の名を知らない心理学者、ことに動物心理学者はいないだろう。

ロレンス博士は、当時六十二歳、あたたかな大きな掌をもった老人で、遠来の私をこころよく迎えてくれた。

It was an early spring day a few years ago when I visited Dr. Lawrence at the Max Planz Institute.

Dr. Lawrence is a world authority on animal instincts, or more precisely, on the endogenous behavior of animals.

There is probably not a psychologist, especially an animal psychologist, who does not know his name.

Dr. Lawrence, an elderly man with large, warm palms, was sixty-two years old at the time, and welcomed me warmly from afar.

男は言う。「だから私は、死体なんか怖くはないっていったんだ。私には、人間の生命ってやつが不気味なんだ」

痩せた若い男は、怯えた子犬のようなおどおどした目をしていた。

「ところが、奴はその私を、私の恐怖を、ぜんぜん理解できなかった。

　奴は、バカか狂人か、その両方かに違いないんだ。

　まったく、悪い奴にとっつかまったもんです」

The man says, "That's why I said I wasn't afraid of dead bodies. So I said, I'm not afraid of dead bodies. Human life is creepy to me.

The skinny young man had the frightened eyes of a frightened puppy.

But he didn't understand me, or my fear, at all.

　He must be an idiot, a lunatic, or both.

　I'm really stuck with a bad guy.
