Ep 101 - Grief at Christmas

Ep 101 - Grief at Christmas

Whether you are a person of faith or not for many people around the world Christmas is a time of celebration and fun. It is often symbolic of the end of the year and a good excuse to get together with family, friends and work colleagues to celebrate what was and what wasn’t. Even the most diehard of Grinch’s will sometimes be found in critical care with a bit of tinsel discreetly worn or a pair of reindeer ears on their computer. Children are often a special feature of Christmas as the excitement builds for Santa and presents and so when families find themselves in the critical care setting it can be confronting for both them and us.

So what does happens at Christmas time in critical care? For those of us who have to continue to work shifts, or try to study, with those who are injured, sick, dying or just plain silly? Is working in critical care harder during the Festive Season and are there things we need to be aware of for both ourselves and our patients?

Ep 2 - Diagnostic Decision Making

Ep 2 - Diagnostic Decision Making

In this episode we discuss how we make clinical decisions in acute and emergency medicine, often starting with what the patient hasn't got wrong with them: ruling out the worst case scenario. We discuss sensitivity and specificity and likelihood ratios (don't worry - in a really understandable way), and how the pre test probability is so important.

St Emlyn's Medical School Podcast - An Introduction

St Emlyn's Medical School Podcast - An Introduction

Welcome to the St Emlyn's Medical School Podcast - a new venture from the team at St Emlyn's .
After ten years, 200 episodes and over 1 million downloads of the St Emlyn's podcast we thought we should turn our attention to medical students and other healthcare students. In this new podcast, and on our new website (stemlynsmedschool.org) we will be covering topics in acute and emergency care both in written and podcast form.
We will use the new GMC Content Map as our guide, as this will form the basis of the new Medical Licensing Assessment in years to come, but our content will be useful for all heathcare students in the UK and beyond.
We are really looking forward to talking to you more. Please take a look at the website and subscribe so you will get updates whenever something new is posted. The first epsiode of our podcast will be released soon, please take a listen and if you enjoy it tell your colleagues and don't forget to like and subscribe.
