The Importance of Imagery Aaliyah Meza

Imagery is an amazing way for authors to connect with their readers. Imagery to the reader gives them a “mind movie”.As you read the author's description you slowly can start to imagine you are in the book. Feeling, hearing, seeing and touching what the author is describing. The author of To kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee),uses imagery to help connect with the readers.

You can see Lee using imagery in TKAM(To Kill a Mockingbird), “A few graves in the cemetery were marked with brightly colored glass and broken Coca-Cola bottles.” (Lee 157).“It was a happy cemetery. The warm bittersweet smell..” (Lee 157). Here you can see the character describing what they see and smell walking through a cemetery. While reading you can imagine the graves, the colored glass and the broken Coca-Cola bottles scattered around, along with the bittersweet smell.

When an author uses imagery they are giving the reader an image of the scenery by using very descriptive words. It is important to use imagery to not only show the reader the setting but to keep the reader engaged. To connect with the reader, letting the reader use their imagination.
