The Private Record — Episode 014 — "When Someone Uses You To Commit Suicide" 

In what is a first for The Private Record (and very possibly the last!), Matt speaks with a victim of a rare but increasingly prevalent phenomenon known as ‘pedestrian suicide’. Don’t know what that is? Well neither did Matt— until this episode’s guest Bekah enlightened him on the matter by telling her story. 

Which goes like this: around 2am, after a long night at work, Bekah was driving home along an empty Atlanta freeway when WHAM— her car slams into a blur that had suddenly flung itself right in front of her, out of absolutely nowhere. After crashing into the median Bekah somehow gained control of her vehicle, came to a stop, looked back, and— yep, that blur was a human being. 

And somehow, this was only the BEGINNING of Bekah’s nightmare night. Speaking of nightmares— Matt’s been having them ever since conducting this interview. So consider yourself warned— intense content ahead!

The Private Record — Episode 013 — "When Your Stomach Explodes"

Our guest today is a charming Australian fellow named Kirby. And boy oh boy does he have a medical nightmare of a story for you!

About 4 years ago, at the peak of the world’s initial Covid freak-out, Kirby’s stomach had a freak-out of its own… unthinkable, unbearable, impossible-to-imagine pain. Usually not one to worry, Kirby knew he had no choice but to rush to the hospital, which of course was being flooded with panicked (and dying) Covid patients. Basically, it was the absolute worst time in world history to go to the emergency room.

But it’s a good thing Kirby DID go to the emergency room. Thanks to an underlying condition Kirby didn’t even know he had, his large intestine had quite literally exploded, causing his body to go into septic shock, putting him on the precipice of death. 5 weeks, 3 surgeries, 1 bout with Covid, 1 (temporary) colostomy bag, and 1 gnarly scar later, Kirby would be able to say he had gone through complete and utter hell— and was extremely lucky to still be among the living.

This is his story!

It took Tess 30+ years to realize she was a lesbian. Episode 11 is here! CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP!
When Matt (this episode’s guest, not its host!) was in his late 20s, he was a broke meth addict who needed an easier way to score — which is exactly what he got when he got hooked up with a high-quantity dealer who needed a hand moving product in Matt’s upper-class NorCal neighborhood. 'Good deal!', Matt thought... but what Matt did NOT think, or even have the slightest clue about, was that this new dealer pal worked for the infamous (and murderous) Zetas cartel— that is, until the FEDs came-a-knocking, with the threat of a MINIMUM sentence of 25 to life, unless Matt became an informant for them. So without much of a choice, Matt went to work (undercover!) for the FBI, helping put scores of dealers and middle men behind bars over the course of three chaotic, high-stress years. But between the mental strain of the undercover work, his newfound sobriety, and his growing conscience, Matt knew he would not be able to live like this forever. So Matt asked himself the ultimate question: continue living like this under the proverbial sword of Damocles, or finally face the music and spend some time behind bars?

Episode 10 is here! Behold, the story of a genuine MEDICAL MIRACLE!

Bode was a happy, able-bodied, athletic 14-year-old kid— until a completely random, totally freak accident left him with a nearly severed spinal cord, entirely unable to move from the neck down. His doctors warned him not to even HOPE to walk again, as literally no one in the history of medicine has recovered from such an injury. (Not one!!!)

Somehow, against all possible odds, he not only began to recover— but he was suddenly recovering at an astonishingly rapid clip. Which bred hope, optimism, and determination. Which in turn sped the pace of his recovery even further. Until one day he was completely back to full health, walking and talking and LIVING as he always had, even getting back into his sport of choice (which, being that he is from the American Northeast, is of course lacrosse).

Episode Nine is here— and with it comes our very first HERO’S STORY.
Jonathan was just your average shy, emo 15 year old kid— until a schoolmate brought a 9mm to the classroom, threatening to kill everyone in sight. Thinking fast and knowing he wasn’t going to die a sitting duck, Jonny Boy took it upon himself to DISARM and BEAT THE HELL out of the would-be mass-murderer. All of a sudden, Jonathan was a national hero, even appearing on programs like 'Dr. Phil' to tell his story of bravery and strength. Sounds crazy, right?! Well, what’s even CRAZIER is that that’s just the BEGINNING of Jonathan’s story, as this heroic incident — while initially bringing him notoriety and popularity — led him down a confusing path of anxiety and self-destruction. Once again, Jonathan had to find the strength to confront the beast in front of him. And once again, he BEAT THE HELL out of it!
