William Mahone and the Battle of the Crater, July 30, 1864
In this episode I discuss the Union mine explosion and assault at the Battle of the Crater outside of Petersburg, Virginia, July 30, 1864 in which Union black soldiers faced the Army of Northern Virginia in combat for the first time. I read several letters and reminiscences describing the attack and subsequent atrocities perpetrated upon many of the black soldiers by some of the Confederate soldiers. Many of these Confederate soldiers were under the command of Major General William Mahone, and I also recently sat down with historian Charlie Knight to talk about William Mahone and Charlie's upcoming biography on "Little Billy." I hope you enjoy.
