Dougal Allan - Multi Sport Champion on joining Team New Zealand & Racing with Richie McCaw

Dougal Allan - Multi Sport Champion on joining Team New Zealand & Racing with Richie McCaw

Dougal Allan is a kid from a place called Foxton who has now become an integral part of Team New Zealand for the Americas Cup.
He etched his name in Coast to Coast record books with an incredible nine podium finishes in 10 attempts in the iconic south island event.
Simply put- the man is a savage. This is a small part of the Dougal Allan story…and we recorded it on his 39th birthday immediately after a full day of training with Team NZ!

Thanks to my pals at Generate and Radix for sponsoring this episode.
I recently found out that around half a million Kiwis are missing out on the KiwiSaver Government contribution, which is an extra $521 each year.
That's where Generate comes in. They have a team of advisers who can come to you, go over your options, and help make sure you’re getting the most out of your Kiwisaver investment.
If you’ve never got KiwiSaver advice before, do your future self a favour. Head to their website to request a meeting with a Generate adviser.

A copy of their product disclosure statement is available on their website. The issuer of the scheme is Generate Investment Management Limited and of course past performance does not guarantee future returns.

Radix have also backed this episode.
Dougal and his mates have known about Radix for years. It’s a massive brand in the elite and pro circles. Its only now that the rest of us are learning how their nutritional products can improve our quality of life.

The Dark Side of Being an Olympian - Black Sticks Legend, Brooke Hayde on Mental Health in Sport

The Dark Side of Being an Olympian - Black Sticks Legend, Brooke Hayde on Mental Health in Sport

Brooke Hayde (formerly Brooke Neal) will hate me saying this, but she is one of the GOATS when it comes to hockey in New Zealand.
She played for the Black sticks an incredible 176 times!
At the 2016 Olympics she finished in an agonizing 4th place. Then 2 years later at the commonwealth games she managed to bring home a gold medal.
This podcast is part of the Brooke Neal story:
Her incredible hockey career- the huge highs and massive lows.
Managing mental health and the pressure of high-performance sport.
Her open letter to all Olympians that went viral.
How the book “The Mindful athlete” changed her outlook AND performance.
Richie McCaw’s powerful pep talk to the Black Sticks.
The impact of losing her best friend to cancer at a young age.
    Becoming a mum.
Her brand-new business venture in Hamilton and so much more.

Matt Heath Reflects on TV, Music, Radio Career - Tackling Mortality, Philosophy & Grief in New Book

Matt Heath is an exceptionally talented guy who I am lucky to call a friend.
You name the media job this guy has done it- breakfast radio, TV series, a movie, music, animated kids TV, newspaper columns and now a book- A Life Less Punishing.
Thanks to Generate and Radix for sponsoring this episode. These awesome kiwi companies have been so good to me. So, if you like the podcast AND you like the sound of these products and services, please support the legends who support the poddy.
Generate are award-winning KiwiSaver specialists. Taking the time to make sure you’re in the right fund, and ensuring you're maximising your account, could really improve your lifestyle in retirement.
And that’s where Generate can help! Generate have a team of KiwiSaver advisers across the country available to meet with you, chat through your options, and help you make sure your KiwiSaver investment is working for you.
You can request a no-obligation chat with one of their advisers. Just head to…

Also, thanks to the Radix team. This kiwi company started a decade ago in a garage in Northland, now they have a sleek factory in the Waikato where they are making nutritional products that are world class.
I can’t speak highly enough about their protein powders.
If you think protein shakes are just for gym junkies, think again. Most of us don’t get enough protein, and a shake with a scoop of protein powder is the best way to fix that. It’s also great if your goal is to manage your weight- it fills you up without heaps of dead calories.

Eugene Bareman on Relationship with Israel Adesanya, Fighter Pay in UFC & Meeting Mark Zuckerberg

    Eugene Bareman.
If you google his business “City Kickboxing” the first question that pops up is “Why is city kickboxing so good.”
Eugene and his gym have produced so many UFC stars- most notably Israel Adesanya, Dan Hooker and Kaikara France. He has even been recognized as the best MMA coach in the world in 2022.
We talk about his early years and his incredible drive and discipline.
What his goals were when he opened his gym.
His interactions with Dana White and his thoughts on the UFC and whether the fighters are paid fairly.
The weight of responsibility he feels as a coach of athletes in a sport that can literally be a matter of life and death.
Hilarious story about an interaction with Mark Zuckerberg and who would win an MMA fight between Zuck and Elon Musk. And so much more.
Thanks to my pals at Radix and Generate for making this conversation possible.
Radix is a Waikato based nutrition company with one simple goal- to make you healthier through what you put into your mouth.

Jay-Jay Feeney - RE-RELEASE of my most downloaded episode so far

Jay-Jay Feeney - RE-RELEASE of my most downloaded episode so far

This conversation with Jay-Jay Feeney, NZ broadcasting royalty, came out one year ago, back when this was still a podcast for runners.
A lot of you may have heard it at the time, but there are a lot of brand new listeners to the podcast who may be hearing this for the first time.
This was a strange episode...just because of the intensely personal nature of it.
ICYMI: Jay-Jay and I got married in 2004. We separated about 6 years ago but remain very close.
Because of this relationship, we know everything about one another and had the ability to touch upon some very serious stuff. Because of that a trigger warning is needed- this podcast episode discusses family violence and sexual abuse, infertility and IVF, depression, and suicide.
If you listen to this and need some professional help in New Zealand, you can call or text 1737 free of charge to talk to a trained counsellor.

Thanks to Skin Institute for sponsoring this episode.
It’s estimated that about 20% of all adults will get varicose veins at some point in their lives.
As well as age, other risk factors include family history of veins disease, being overweight, standing jobs, and pregnancy. If left untreated, they can lead to serious health issues. Skin Institute are THE experts to diagnose and treat varicose veins and use the latest non-surgical techniques.
If you have health insurance, there’s a good chance your treatment will be covered – just check with your provider.
