Midnight Texas, IF and Movies to Help Kids with Trauma – Reviews

This week it’s Tamzyn and Clayton taking the reins to guide us through three captivating reviews from the geek-side.

First up, scaling the heights of monster mayhem against a backdrop of melodrama, the team explore Midnight Texas. Prepare for spoiler alerts as they dissect the thousand-year relationship of the town’s gay couple. It seems the charm of this show is during a monster melodrama, themes of found family and the diversity of creatures abound.

Next, our insightful duo shifts their focus to “IF,” a film boasting a star-studded cast and unexpected twists. Tamzyn and Clayton reveal how the trailer may mislead viewers. With moments that tug at the heartstrings with a sprinkle in comedic relief, “IF” transcends age barriers with its blend of animated characters and stellar performances by real actors. Is it possible our hosts even share a bit about their own imaginary friends? Brace yourselves for a film that prompts deep conversations post-viewing.

Lastly, Clayton and Tamzyn sensitively unpack the role of movies in helping children cope with trauma. They explore the extensive list of films tailored to address various traumatic life events for kids, some of which may surprise you. Clayton, donning his teacher’s hat, advocates for age-appropriate movie choices while emphasising the importance of knowing your child’s readiness for different narratives. A highlight is Clayton and Tamzyn delving into the fascinating realm of animal allegories in children’s films.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Doctor Who – Season One and Infested – Reviews

When it comes to a planet dominated by apes, this week Miranda, Clayton and Sam unanimously concur: this film skillfully immerses you in its well-constructed world. During the lively discussion a very interesting theme emerges around the question: Are we inherently biased toward the human saga, neglecting the perspective of our simian counterparts? Clayton scrutinises the film’s length, and the team contemplate why the apes repeat the same pitfalls experienced throughout human history. Will this film be better than expected? Listen in to find out.

Alright, Whovians, brace yourselves as we embark on a turbulent voyage through time and space. Hang on to your TARDIS, set your sonic screwdrivers to ‘thrill,’ and prepare for a whirlwind discussion that delves into the Doctor’s past traumas. Get ready for a mix bag, and we don’t mean Jelly Babies. During the banter, we can’t overlook the biggest question is Doctor Who veering dangerously close to its roots as a children’s show?

For those with a fear of eight-legged creatures, consider yourselves forewarned. The next segment, “Infested,” delves into the realm of arachnids, building tension as Clayton and Miranda ponder the authenticity of the spider-filled horrors presented. Do spiders truly inject their eggs into humans, or is it merely an urban legend? And does this French horror flick have the legs to stand on its own? Find out in this week’s reviews.

Have fun or run screaming if you don’t like spiders.

Dead Boy Detectives, Renegade Nell and A Good Book – Reviews

This week, Clayton, Sam, and Tamzyn are back to bring us some fabulous new shows and book reviews.

Kicking things off with “Dead Boy Detectives,” a captivating spin-off from the Sandman series. Tamzyn advises savouring this series slowly, noting, “You know it’s good when you want to string it out.” On the flip side, Clayton insists it’s too good to pause, advocating for a binge-watch. The burning question: will the team agree with Sam and her plot hole discoveries? And is that magnificent neck tattoo real?

Next, the team dives into “Renegade Nell,” sparking lively discussions about its unique setting in the brief reign of Queen Anne in the 18th Century. The question on everyone’s mind, is the character of Nell based on a real person? The team all agree the show delivers magic intertwined with breathtaking fight scenes.

Finally, the Geeks indulge in their favourite pastime: discussing recent reads in “A Good Book.” They ponder the hierarchy of paper books, digital books, and audio books. It’s a treat for our ears as they delve into titles like “Bored Gay Werewolves,” “Moriarty and the Silent Order,” and “Ghost Station,” among others.

    Enjoy the fun!

So, grab a spicy margarita and buckle up for impressive stunts and silly good fun.

Next up Clayton, Tamzyn and Sam review Beacon 23, and it’s unanimous. The series seemingly emerged out of nowhere, leaving everyone wondering why they hadn’t heard about it earlier. Every aspect of the series is a delightful surprise, prompting the question: is it possible that the series surpasses the book? Consistently engaging and filled with hope for the future of AI, the teams fascinating discussion delves into the intricacies of personal AI and its impact.

Clayton and Tamzyn then journey into the final series of Star Trek: Discovery, where each episode offers a unique experience with ample screen time for most characters.
