    Fartleks, the wonderful invention of Gusta Holmer in the 1930’s, is something we are all familiar with. Run hard for a minute, jog for a minute, repeat twenty times. But in today’s world where everything is measured and coaches rely on that feedback to adjust workloads, the fartlek is becoming a lost art. In this episode, we go deep on what fartleks are, what they do, and where we have misinterpreted them. We go into the natural evolution of Holmer’s original idea, discussing how Kenyans utilize the concept and Renato Canova’s use of alternations as a modern incarnation of the workout. We hope that you walk away with a new appreciation for fatlek workouts, and more so, have some new ideas on how to implement them into your program.

    Episode 112: The Myth of Losing Speed

    One of my pet peeves when discussing endurance work is the concept of losing speed. In the middle distance world, this concept of losing speed is widespread. Go to any coaching conference, hang around enough coaches, or just talk to your athletes and you’ll hear this concept over and over. It’s used as an argument against doing any kind of aerobic work, regardless of sport or event. It’s thought that only those “slow” distance kids should do long work because speed doesn’t matter much in their world. So they can afford to be slow.







    But here’s the thing, if you are losing speed that much during training, it’s not the long aerobic work that is doing it, it’s that your training sucks.In this episode, we discuss why athletes tend to lose speed and what they can do to maintain or develop it.
