Hooray for Anime is an anime reactionary podcast. Some of us are veterans to the genre, and others are just dipping our toes into it but nevertheless, this show is meant to be a celebration of all things good, bad, and just plain weird in all things anime. Each episode, podcast host Chris Shriver (@SHRIVES93) alongside a few guests watch an anime movie/series or part of a series, and give their impressions of it, give a brief synopsis, have a spoiler-free review, tell you how to watch, and then have a super spoilery discussion!

    05. Violet Evergarden Pt. 3 Episodes 10-13

Violet Evergarden (2018) is a Netflix-hosted anime series which revolved around a girl (Violet) who was once considered to be nothing more than a tool for war. Born and raised on the battlefield, Violet does not know of the comforts of life, compassion, and above all else, what love truly means. After the war is over, Violet must assimilate to a ‘normal’ life, and learn how to become an everyday citizen. She takes up a job as a writer – referred to as ‘Dolls’, often for those who are trying to get in touch with the ones they’ve lost contact with during the war. The series focuses on her struggles to learn what it means to be human, and the friends (and foes) she meets along her journey.

In this episode of Hooray for Anime, we’ll be discussing episodes 10-13 of Violet Evergarden:

    10. “A Loved One Will Always Watch Over You”
    11. “I Don’t Want Anybody Else to Die”

    02. Ghost in the Shell (1995) – What is LIFE!?

    02. Ghost in the Shell (1995) – What is LIFE!?

Ghost in the Shell (1995) is one of the most famous anime films to release not only in Japan, but around the world. To this day, it is regarded as one of the best of the genre, and it still holds a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. In this episode, we discuss the themes of establishing a space, post-colonialism, how the film reflects the people of Hong Kong in the mid 90’s, and even the meaning of life ITSELF! Join us as we dive into a discussion that become much more philosophical than any of us expected it to be.

Film Synopsis: In 2029, with the advance of cybernetic technology, the human body can be “augmented” or even completely replaced with cybernetic parts. Another significant achievement is the cyberbrain, a mechanical casing for the human brain that allows access to the Internet and other networks. An often-mentioned term is “ghost”, referring to the consciousness inhabiting the body (the “shell”).

How to Watch: Ghost in the Shell (1995) can be found on various streaming services for rental/purchase. Those who are members of Starz will be able to watch it as a part of their subscription.

Who’s Talking: This weeks cast consists of Chris Shriver (@SHRIVES93), Josh Mobley (@TheJawaJosh), Rebecca June Lane (@rebeccajunelane), Brian Barnett (@ribnax), and James Clark (@JamesVonKralc).

    01. Akira Review, Discussion, and its Impact

    01. Akira Review, Discussion, and its Impact

Akira, one of the most impactful anime movies to reach the west. On this, our inaugural episode of Hooray for Anime, Chris Shriver (@SHRIVES93), Brian Barnett (@ribnax), and Josh Mobley (@TheJawaJosh) discuss what we took away from this iconic film, how we interpreted its ending, and its importance to filmmakers today.

Hooray for Anime is a celebration of all things anime in the form of series and movies. Each episode, we react, review, and discuss some of our favorite (and not so favorite) shows and movies. Though some of us are more experienced in the medium than others, we all band together each episode to answer the age old question of “how and why do people not watch this stuff more often, because IT’S AMAZING”. If you have any movie/series recommendations for us, please hit us up on Twitter @HoorayForAnime, or by shooting an email to hoorayforanimepodcast@gmail.com.
