Music at "Alter Peter" in Munich

Music at "Alter Peter" in Munich

    Episode Notes
Right in the center of Munich, the Bavarian capital, lies Marienplatz, St. Mary's Square. And only a few yards away stands the Church of St. Peter or "Peterskirche" also lovingly known as "Alter Peter", the old Peter. Even though the church has been rebuilt and restored several times throughout a thousand years and more, it is the oldest settlement of Munich, where the name of the city comes from, deriving from the term Munichen, meaning "by the monks". This is where the monks of the Benedictine order ran a monastery that later became the Old Town of Munich.

Alter Peter is also famous due to its bell tower which can be climbed to have the best views of the city and beyond. St. Peter's is also known for the high quality of music that can be found at the church services and the many concerts scheduled throughout the year.

I have been part of the music at Alter Peter for a while now and today we are talking with the Kapellmeister (chapel master) of Peterskirche, Sebastian Adelhardt, all about his musical career, church music and its famous composers. Come along...
