Ecoaffordable Su Hananel

Si hay un producto estrella del "zero waste", definitivamente es el shampoo sólido. Probablemente hayas escuchado mucho o poco o solo rumores sobre el sulfato y otros químicos que se añaden a los champús regulares que han hecho que poco a poco estas grandes marcas detrás de ellos hayan ido perdiendo clientes... incluyéndome. Aquí les cuento cómo fue esa transición de un shampoo sin sulfatos ni parabenos hacia el shampoo sólido (o mejor dicho, varios). Y el camino ha sido... digamos rocoso. En el último episodio de esta primera temporada, quiero responder esta pregunta que me he hecho varias veces en el último año (y estoy segura de no ser la única): ¿El shampoo sólido funcionará para mí? #ohboy ¡Aquí vamos!

If there's a "zero waste" star product, that would definitely be shampoo bars. You probably have heard a lot or a little or maybe just rumours about sulfates and other chemicals regular shampoo uses, which is why big brands have been losing clients each year... including me. I want to share here how that transition went for me; going from a sulfate and paraben-free shampoo to a shampoo bar (or many, actually). Because the road has been... rocky, to say the least. On this first season's last episode, I want to answer a question I've asked myself many times in the last year (and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one): Do shampoo bars work for me? #ohboy Here we go!

Desde que mis hormonas empezaron a revolotear, salir de casa sin usar desodorante era impensable, casi, casi un pecado. Eso, sin contar cuánto nos salva de las manchas de sudor en la ropa. Entonces, si has usado una marca de desodorante y/o antitranspirante por mucho tiempo, ¿por qué lo cambiarías? Te entiendo perfectamente. Yo me hacía la misma pregunta porque... ¿qué pasa si el desodorante natural no funciona? ¿vale la pena? Muchos se han animado a usar uno por el miedo a uno de los ingredientes de los desodorantes antitranspirantes: el aluminio. Se ha dicho tanto de este ingrediente, pero sobre todo, que causa cáncer de mama y que daña los riñones. Pero, ¿cuán cierto es? ¡Ponte cómodo y dale play!

Ever since my hormones woke up, leaving the house without deodorante was unthinkable, almost, almost a sin. And I'm not even mentioning what a lifesaver it is preventing sweat stains on our clothes. So, if you have used a deodorant and/or antiperspirant brand for so long, why would you change it, right? I got you. I asked myself the same question because... what happens if natural deodorant doesn't work? Is it worth it? Many have been drawn to it by fear of one of its ingredients: aluminium. So much has been said about it, especially, that it can cause breast cancer and that it damages our kidneys. But, how true is that? Get comfortable and press play!

Desde que nació la idea de Ecoaffordable, quise colaborar en romper el mito de que se necesita mucho dinero para girar hacia una vida más ecosustentable. Pero, ¿qué pasa cuando hay productos que cuestan un poco más? ¿Siempre son un gasto? Siempre... ¿sin excepción? Muchas veces me he topado con esa disyuntiva, dudando entre si comprar algo o no, si vale la pena o no. Y así es como llegué a una idea: las compras inteligentes. Un sistema que me ayuda a mantenerme dentro de mi presupuesto. Ajá... ya, ¿pero qué son y cómo sé que lo que estoy comprando cae en esa categoría? Por más lindo y maravilloso que sea el maquillaje siempre llega el momento de decile adiós: Adiós base, adiós rubor, adiós máscara de pestañas, adiós delineador... Ese proceso de demaquillarme solía ser un tanto molesto cuando tenía que pasar más de 5 minutos frotando el líquido limpiador con una bolita de algodón para quitarme el rímel a prueba de agua hasta que mis ojos terminaban rojizos, rogándome que pare (figurativamente hablando, claro). Y no es necesario pasar por esa (mini) tortura. Hoy les cuento qué ingredientes usan muchos de los demaquillantes comerciales y por qué cambié a los serums de aceites naturales a pesar de tener un la-a-a-a-rgo historial de acné. ¡Dale play!

As beautiful and wonderful as our make-up can be, there always comes a time when we have to say goodbye: Bye foundation, bye blush, bye mascara, bye eyeliner... That make-up removal process used to be a little harsh because I had to spend more than 5 minutes rubbing a cleanser against my eye to take off waterproof mascara until they turned a bit red. My eyes would beg me to stop (figuratively speaking, of course). And it's not necessary to go through that kind of torture (Yay!). On this episode, I'll tell you what ingredients are found in many commercial facial cleansers and why I switched to natural serums even though a have a very, very long history with acne. Hit play!

Empecé a maquillarme a los 13 o 14 años y una de las cosas que siempre me costó era tener que quitarlo de noche. Me daba una pereza enorme. Pero ni modo, había que hacerlo. Y aunque me olvidé un par (o más de un par) de veces, mi infaltable compañera eran las bolitas de algodón o las toallitas demaquillantes si tenía (más) pereza todavía. Pero, malas noticias... no son sustentables. ¿Por qué? Ya va, aquí te lo cuento todo! Incluyendo cómo es que llegué a los pads reutilizables. ¡UF! ¿Cómo decidir entre los diferentes tipos que existen? Bueno, un poquito de ciencia y datos curiosos pueden ayudarte a tomar la decisión ;) ¡Empecemos!

I started wearing make-up when I was 13 or 14 years old and one of the hardest things for me was to take it off at night. I felt so lazy. But, it didn't matter. It had to be done. And even though I forgot a couple (or more than a couple) of times, my most trusted companion was cotton wool or wet wipes if I felt even lazier. But, bad news people.... they aren't sustainable. Why? I'll tell you all about it here! Including how I got to start using reusable pads, but whoa! They are made of different materials, how should I decide? Hoy vengo con un episodio un tanto diferente, una mezcla de "let's get real" acompañada de una dosis de cero juicios. Porque... ¡qué difícil es a veces! Nos cuestionan y nos autocuestionamos constantemente. Y a veces es más sencillo colocarse una máscara para evitar el juicio que admitir que no somos perfectos. Que hay cambios que aun no estamos dispuestos a hacer o que no podemos o se nos hacen un mundo. Y quiero que sepas que está bien. No estás sol@. Entonces, seamos honestos, ¿qué cambios te cuestan? Yo empiezo.  

Today's episode is a bit different, a mix of "let's get real" with a dose of zero judgment. Because... how hard it is sometimes! We are questioned and we question ourselves constantly. Sometimes it can feel like every decision, every action is under scrutiny. And it can be easier to put on a mask to avoid that judgment than to admit that we are not perfect. That there are changes that we are not willing to make yet or that we can't or we haven't found our way to it. And I want you to know it is okay. You aren't alone. So, let's be honest. What changes are the hardest for you? I'll start.
