MMEA Session: Where'd We Go? Ensuring The Retention of Pre-Service Teachers of Color

Hi y'all!! So excited to be back to share with you my first ever Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-State Conference Presentation! This presentation discusses the importance of racial diversity in music educators as currently the teaching body in Massachusetts is 93.2% white (DESE, 2023). I share personal anecdotes of my own lived experience as a teacher and person of color, discuss structural/systemic racism, and look at actionable steps we can do right now to support our BIPOC teachers.

    Uprooting the Music Education System

    Uprooting the Music Education System

What if we were to uproot the music education licensure system to make pre-service teachers of color attaining their degree and license to teach more accessible. In this episode we take a look at the inequities pre-service teachers of color face, trying to teach to a system embedded in Western European curriculum and financial burden. This podcast is a manifesto for my International Human Rights Class at Berklee College of Music. Thank you James!

    For Jarritt

    For Jarritt

    TW: Grief.

Today I want to talk with you about someone very important to me, my late mentor Jarritt Ahmed Sheel. I made a promise to myself that I would only come back to podcasting when I felt ready to record the first episode back which had to be in honor of Jarritt. I want everyone to know Jarritt the way I, and so many who love him, know him. Here's to the man who created community with everyone in his orbit. Rest in peace Jarritt, I love you!

    --

Jarritt's wonderful wife, Antonia Sheel, along with Jarritt’s colleagues at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, are working to establish a scholarship and several other initiatives to honor the memory and work of Jarritt.  Jarritt worked with countless people from all walks of life during his time as an educator, band leader, mentor and friend. His reach was impactful and meaningful to so many.  Please consider joining in these efforts.

Our goal is to raise $60,000! This will allow us to create an endowed scholarship fund as well as create a lecture series named in Jarritt’s honor.  While this will be an ongoing effort with the first goal being to raise the minimum $10K to establish the scholarship by mid April 2023, every amount counts!

Also, consider asking if your employer would match your gift. If you have a business, consider making a tax deductible contribution. You will be supporting the growth and development of students as well as fostering powerful conversations around music education.  If you would like to donate to the scholarship at Berklee in memory of Jarritt Ahmed Sheel, please visit: Berklee.edu/giving   (https://www.berklee.edu/giving) and designate this scholarship  (You may have to click OTHER and write in his name below that: Jarritt Ahmed Sheel Memorial Scholarship).  OR   Checks may be sent to Berklee College of Music, 1140 Boylston Street, MS-855 IA, Boston, MA 02115, please note on the check "Jarritt Ahmed Sheel Memorial Scholarship".
