Ladies Ony - (and men can listen too)!

Ladies Ony - (and men can listen too)!

This Ladies only podcast will be a series of several episodes ranging from how women treat each other to what women can do to move forward faster and bring others with them.  So make sure you are following me so you can easily get the future episodes as they are launched.
Let’s all agree that women need to do a better job at supporting and talking each other up.  Its mind boggling to me that research shows women are more inhumane to women than men are – This fact is based on an interesting book called Woman’s Inhumanity To Woman by Phyllis Chesler.
Where has the sisterhood gone?  And how is this possible especially when you think about the fact that more than half of the planet are made up of women, are in schools, the workplace and everything else have more women than men.  So why is it that we can’t get our heads around supporting each other?
We need to do a better job at raising women up.  One of the best examples of this was when I was at JPM there was an effort which was launched and it was called 30-5-1.  Something you can do every week or every month.  Easy to do – spend 30 minutes mentoring or coaching another women, spend 5 minutes congratulating a woman on  something she did and 1 minute telling someone else about it.  30-5 and 1. Pretty easy to follow and it costs no money – just your time.  Imagine if each of us did this how awesome it would be.
There was an article in Darlingmagazine.org you should check out.  It hits the nail on the head as to why celebrating other women makes you more successful.  It’s a great read, pass it on.  That’s Darlingmagazine.org

Ladies Only - don't come to work to work

Ladies Only - don't come to work to work

Here is your new mantra - Don't come to work to work – come to work to network.   Every day when you are getting ready to tackle your workplace – repeat this mantra and make it part of your daily habit.  DON’T COME TO WORK TO WORK – COME TO WORK TO NETWORK.
If you ask a woman to do something the first thing she is going to do is think about how she is going to do it- writing a list, timelines, schedule meetings or whatever.  The never ending to do list – that never seems to get done.  Just curious has anyone ever seen a man’s to do list – news flash – they don’t exist.
If you ask a man to do the same thing the first thing he is going to do is try and figure out who he can find to get it done.
The whole point is that the requestor may not care who does the task just that it gets done.
From this moment on don’t assume you have to do everything – which is why we always see women working and sometimes we get overwhelmed.  We always seem so busy and have a lot to do and we never have time to network, meet new people or develop relationships because we are too busy and don’t have the time or even make the time.
This was one of my biggest mistakes when I started my career because you would think that the logical thing to do at work is WORK. Which is what I did.  I still remember my mom saying go to work earlier than the boss leave later than the boss and don’t get the boss mad.  Ok mom will do and thanks for that advice.
And if you do good work and keep your nose clean good things will happen, promotions and that sort of thing.  Not exactly true..  Look don’t get me wrong I don’t want you showing up to work and spending your entire day talking to people and developing relationships, going to every event and becoming known by the senior people.  What I am saying is manage your time and think about how you use it. Be more strategic with everything you do and always have the big picture in mind.
Here are several hacks you might want to try which allowed me to carve out time for me to not just be working– all were habits of mine and maybe they will work for you too.
1 - PUT YOURSELF ON YOUR CALENDAR
    2 - DON’T CHECK EMAIL
3 - DON’T DO ANYTHING IN THE OFFICE YOU CAN DO AT HOME
Listen to the podcast for details.
The next episode in the Ladies Only season will be posted next week and will focus on networking, In the meantime please share and follow.  I hope you are able to try out some of these hacks.  Send me your comments or questions and until the next time and don’t forget to eat.

    Ladies Only - Professional Stalking

    Ladies Only - Professional Stalking

Remember your new mantra – don’t come to work come to work to network.

Just coming to work everyday– even if you are a high performer and everyone likes you and gives you stellar feedback that is not the recipe for advancement.

If the only person who knows you are the people who are supposed to know you because of your job– that’s what I could call a career limiting move.

I am not talking about shaking hands at events or kissing up to senior people

I am talking about getting to know more people and getting them to know you.

Who you are not just what you can do – more like a character reference.

Professional stalking is not for everyone but I think you get the point.

So remember don’t come to work to work – come to work to network. Working is important don’t get me wrong – you get paid to work. But don’t forget about the importance of networking, meeting people, developing relationships and expanding your professional circle. Take a % of your day, week or month and make it a point to network with others.  But remember to be strategic and connect your network plan to your career goals.

The H'er'story of Davidisms - Life and Death Lessons

The H'er'story of Davidisms - Life and Death Lessons

This podcast is an abridged version of my H’er’story along with some life and death lessons I learned along the way I thought you might find useful.
If you never want to read my autobiography this episode is the ez-Pass version of my life along with some basic life lessons from my mother that I am so grateful for to this day.  I also take you on a whirlwind journey from my birth in Birmingham, England, all the way to my retirement from corporate America and the lessons I have learned throughout.
I am living a pretty good life considering how I got started - My mom would always say it’s not how you start something it’s how you end it– so when you are faced with wondering what your future looks like – think about the little black kid from England who came to the US in a breadbasket,  think about the challenges she faced growing up in the Bronx in the 60’s and 70’s, think about the fact she looked like one of the little Rascals, she had a lisp and bowled legs in grade school, she was not part of the in crowd and always wondered when or if she would have the opportunity to make something of herself because her profile did not scream success,  If anything it screamed statistic. Then think about her applying to college and through luck, hard work and opportunity getting her foot in the door of corporate America and becoming a business executive, a wife and mother with confidence and conviction.  By my accounting my parent’s sacrifice has been duly paid.  Say to yourself if she can do that with a little then watch what I can do with a lot.

The H'er'story of Davidisms - The Beginning

The H'er'story of Davidisms - The Beginning

Here is how Davidisms got started.  For as long as I can remember, usually shortly after I have given a speech, moderated a panel or just given people advice on what they should do with their career, someone yells out " you should write a book".  Instead of writing a book I decided to make a podcast. It’s more interactive and sounds like it would be more fun.
    What to expect.
Are you wondering how to manage and get ahead in your career? Are you working hard but keep getting passed over for that promotion and not moving up? Are you able to do your job with your eyes closed? Are you still waiting for feedback from your boss? Have you been told - keep doing what you are doing? Do you ever wonder what the secret is of successful people? If you have these and other career questions, you should check out this podcast. It's practical advice I am sharing based upon years of what I have observed, experienced and witnessed which have come to be known as Davidisms.
So here is the thing, all of the podcasts are my personal views on managing ones career based upon what I have learned, what I have observed, what I have heard others say or things I have experienced in my own career. I tried my best to recall the many scenarios for the advice I gave and other Davidisms that have stood the test of time. This podcast is a collection of ideas, thoughts and actions you can take when faced with similar situations.
There will also be an episode for Ladies only and one for let’s just say more seasoned professionals – I call them gray guardians, and I will even put in a few pointers for those summer interns with their brand new suits (many who have forgotten to take the tag off the sleeve or that little X on the back of the skirt or jacket). There will be episodes on conversations I have had with people – it will be called What my mind was thinking versus What my voice was saying. Don’t worry if you are listening to those episodes and you realize this is you and I talking, trust me I did not out you. Many people have asked me similar questions.
I will keep this podcast going as long as I get an audience – even if it’s one person. So please bookmark and subscribe to it and follow me. You can send me career questions you need advice on or comments to anchor.fm/patricia-david.
