A few years ago I was a broke, university dropout, living in one of the worst parts of the country, alone, with nothing but a laptop & a dream. Fast forward a few years, I’m the 29 year old ex CEO of one of the UK’s fastest growing companies. That company is called Social Chain. My world is intense, sometimes crazy, always challenging and always unpredictable. This podcast is simple, every week I’m going to share insights with you from guests with different backgrounds, experiences and learnings. I want to give you a look into what it’s like behind the scenes, being an entrepreneur, the deep, dark thoughts that nobody else will share with you and anything else that’s playing on my mind. This is not scripted and I don't have questions I just see where the conversation takes me. This is the diary of a CEO, I’m Steven Bartlett. I hope nobody is listening, but if you are… keep this to yourself.

E107: Starling Bank: Building a $1.5 Billion Business Against The Odds: Anne Boden

E107: Starling Bank: Building a $1.5 Billion Business Against The Odds: Anne Boden

The story of how Anne built her business is a genuine blockbuster of entrepreneurship and perseverance. Starling is one of the biggest FinTech companies in the world, with billions in deposits, but after listening to this you’ll be amazed how it was possible.

When her co-founder walked out of the company, and took the funding with him, Anne walked in to an office where she was the only employee on the books, and had to start the company she’d built all over again. Little by little, she came back, and a year later landed a mega investment deal in one of the most incredible stories we’ve ever had on this podcast.

What really shines about Anne is the clear sense of mission she’s infused her company with. Anne really cares about doing right by the customer, and cleaning up an industry that historically doesn’t have a record of giving people a fair shake. Anne is in business to make the world a better place, and we think after listening to this you’ll agree that Anne’s story shows business success can come from the most unlikely places.

Moment 32 - Ant Middleton on How To Build A Bulletproof Mindset

In these ‘Moment’ episodes of my podcast, I’ll be selecting my favourite moments from previous episodes of The Diary Of A CEO.

If you need advice on how to build a solid mindset, then Ant Middleton is certainly the man for the job. He’s been in some of the most dangerous, high-stress and uncomfortable situations on the planet which is why I felt compelled to ask him how he built a mindset strong enough to deal with extreme distress.

Ant talks eloquently on how he believes the answer lies within discomfort, something we’re not often pushed towards in the modern world. But with life’s inevitable chaos constantly on the horizon, building a strong mindset isn’t just desirable, it’s necessary.

Moment 31 - How To Instantly Improve Your Creativity: Bruce Daisley

In these ‘Moment’ episodes of my podcast, I’ll be selecting my favourite moments from previous episodes of The Diary Of A CEO.

Creativity is often labelled a skill which only certain people are born with. A gift for only those lucky enough to have it. This statement is NOT correct. We are all creative and we can all train this skill.

Bruce Daisley (Ex VP of Twitter) explains beautifully how we can almost instantaneously engage the creative parts of our brains and allow ideas to flow. Here’s how to instantly improve your creativity.

Steven you have been the business older brother and a mentor that I never had...

One of the biggest steps I’ve had to take over the last year was transitioning from a freelancer to a structured business with employees. Steven you have been the business older brother and a mentor that I never had. This podcast has really helped me and still is helping me in so many different aspects of business; how to deal with certain challenges such as firing someone. Still not sure on the love-work balance too. We have so much in common it’s mental. We grew up in the same area in Manchester (Moss side/longsight), Being a Nigerian and refusing to go to uni after my A levels and concentrating on my business.

I have always been an entrepreneur, at the age of 9, I was selling sweets to my mates. Despite all the challenges I’ve had to face like being born with one of the deadliest health conditions- sickle cell disease and having a bone marrow transplant i never use it as an excuse not to do stuff. I am someone, like you mentioned in your recent podcast, with inwards locus of control. Even whilst I was on the hospital bed, going through an operation which was 50-50 in terms of success rate, I was buying and selling things on eBay. This was actually when I was first exposed to the possibilities of e-commerce and online marketing. Starting a business has always been what I dreamt of doing but was restricted in so many ways. Now that my health is better, I have been able to fully go after my dream.

It amazing that along this journey I came across someone like you (recommended by my friend), who I can relate to and look up to. Although you might not know this but you have been a real mentor over the last year. I have gone back and listened to all your podcasts and some I have listened to more than once.

In my new Digital Marketing Agency, the first thing I do is to show everyone coming on board a video of social chain on your website and your interview with HBO on YouTube. This is really so they see the vision I have for the business and to show them it is very possible.

Steven, I can go on all day about how much I appreciate and have learnt from your podcast and from social chain but I just want to say Thank you so so much.

I came back to Nigeria last year after my A levels (A long story on its own), I have started my Digital Marketing/Branding Agency. Before coming I managed to maintain all my UK clients that I was freelancing for and have been able to work for them remotely. Also, since coming back I have signed new clients and made some key partnerships that will help grow grow this business.

I am 21 now - there is so much more to my story. I would love to one day meet you in person. You have played such huge role in my journey so far and even in me deciding to come back to Nigeria. I would love to one day visit social chain and shadow under you then come back to Nigeria and implement what I have learnt. The digital world is still at its early stages with so much potential.

I would also love to attend the CEO’s event that you mentioned in your recent podcast, I think it will really help me with growing my business over here in Nigeria. I am 21 so I know I still have much to learn.
