Hi, I’m Dax Shepard, and I love talking to people. I am endlessly fascinated by the messiness of being human, and I find people who are vulnerable and honest about their struggles and shortcomings to be incredibly sexy. I invite you to join me as I explore other people’s stories. We will celebrate, above all, the challenges and setbacks that ultimately lead to growth and betterment. What qualifies me for such an endeavor? More than a decade of sobriety, a degree in Anthropology and four years of improv training. I will attempt to discover human “truths” without any laboratory work, clinical trials or data collection. I will be, in the great tradition of 16th-century scientists, an Armchair Expert.

    Flightless Bird: Renaissance Faire

In this week’s Flightless Bird, David Farrier throws himself back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth during the 1500s. Why? Because Americans love Renaissance Fairs. The whole idea of the Renaissance Fair started back in 1963 - when teacher Phyllis Patterson held an event for her students in her backyard. A few months later her and her husband Ron put on a bigger one - hosting about 8000 people. It kept growing - and in 1966 the official “Renaissance Pleasure Faire of Southern California” was launched. Farrier decides to head along to that very fair see what all the fuss is about.

JVN episode

5 stars for the articulate JVN. 0 stars for DS and co-host. Their total lack of empathy, rudeness, lack of self-reflection was painful and shocking. Hosts that are so ill informed on any subject matter they purposely bring into the conversation and force on their guest, are cringe inducing to say the least. And then the non-apology that followed. Obviously sorry for the result of their ignorant rudeness, not for their ignorance and rudeness itself. So DS his so called curiosity and respect seems quite limited and reserved only for his own “kind” of people. Another celebrity falling through his bubble. Hoping DS and co-host may have learned from this experience. What real interest in your guest means and how to make a real apology.

Enjoyable enough, but dropping it anyway.

4 stars, because I have enjoyed the podcast well enough so far. However, it is now time for me to part ways.
Main reason: the move to Spotify. I actively avoid using it, because they continue to refuse to compensate most of the artists (their main source of revenue!) fairly. To me, they are the Amazon of the music business. And with all the lofty tales Dax spins on his podcast, I really don’t understand this move. You selling out, bud?
Secondly, the interview with Prince Harry. I tend to be a bit foul-mouthed myself and I am not necessarily a fan of royal institutions, but at I do respect them enough to entertain at least some sense of decorum. To me, it felt distastefully chummy in a forced way.
