The Christian confession is that Jesus is Lord, Lord of all. That is what Paul makes very clear in Romans 10. One must believe in the heart, and confess with the mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord of all.

We find the heart of Romans chapter 10 in verse 1 - 21. We develop our theology of Romans 9-11 as we understand the heart of God. Understanding saving faith means that we see the sovereign grace of God, we are humbled by it, look at others with compassion, and have a desire, cultivated by God to be a means through which gospel blessings come to others.

In the first half of Romans 10, Paul is helping us to see that in justification, there must be a clear distinction between the law and gospel. Israel failed to see that the righteousness God demanded was to be attained by faith. Faith which apprehends the truth of gospel demands confession with the mouth to its truthfulness.

In Romans 9, we see clearly that God saves his children, he chooses whom he will save. From verse 30, into chapter 10, we have very clearly human responsibility. Humans are to respond in obedient faith to God's revelation. In these verses we see that Israel sought to establish their own righteousness instead of submitting to God's righteousness.

What does it mean that God has endured with patience, vessels of wrath prepared for destruction-- How does that make known his riches of glory for vessels of mercy-- How can the doctrine of election make your heart soar with praise to God--

As we continue our exposition of Romans 9, we see Paul's appeal to the Old Testament, specifically the Exodus account and the hardening of Pharaoh's heart. God's purposes of election are not only eternal, but he is free to choose to bestow mercy on whomever he wills, and harden whomever he wills.
