Home is Where the Torah Is Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies

In this series, you will hear from six of our incredible teachers as they consider the various components that make up the concept of home and what makes a true home from a Jewish perspective. Rabbi Leon Morris will also have the opportunity to engage in conversation with the gifted architect of our new building Matti Rosenshine, as we think about the ways in which our new building will become our new collective home.



Conflict Intimacy and Shlom Bayit Episode Description (28m 03s):

Ironically, we sometimes grow the most from conflict in our relationships! (00:58) Eruptions of anger or argumentation may – if we treat them well – help us to reveal our needs, or the needs of our partner, which have been suppressed or expressed only partially, due to fear of fallout. One evocative and disturbing midrash provides a springboard for two psychologically proven ways we can use the inevitable conflicts between us and our partners – in a normative good-willed relationship – to bring us to richer, more intimate, more loving connections. Following the podcast (19:55) Leon and Matti discuss the exterior of the building and how it fosters connections between people.

The Tent of Rivka Episode Description (25m 53s):

According to the Torah’s account, when our matriarch Sarah died her legacy was continued by her daughter-in-law Rivka. We will consider the elements (1:00) associated with Sarah’s proverbial tent, as they are described by the Midrash. Along the way, we will discover that to follow Sarah’s example is to transform our own homes into the most potent expression of God’s healing presence in the world. In the Talmud there is a disagreement between two rabbinic figures whether or not it is permitted to teach Torah in the marketplace. In this podcast, Leah Rosenthal dives into this dispute and helps bring its understanding into our modern world. (0:56). Mezuza - Our Best Selves at the Doorway Episode Description (38m 21s):

Together we will explore classical sources that offer insight into the nature of this mitzvah (1:00). What is it trying to teach us and how can the mezuza be a simple but critical tool to help become our best selves. Light and windows impact our experience so profoundly that they blur the boundaries between symbol and reality. Following the podcast, (24:10) Rabbi Leon Morris asks Matti Rosenshine about the importance of light in a building, and how an architect balances intimacy of space with transparency, and what the architect must do to properly include light in all intimate spaces.

Makom Kavuah – Choosing a Place for Prayer. Episode Description (27m 58s):

The Talmud states that a person should have a designated place for prayer. In this podcast, Levi Cooper explores different possibilities for understanding the notion of a set place, a makom kavuah, for prayer (1:02). The Maggid of Melbourne considers this directive from the unique angle of our times when our synagogues shuttered and we find ourselves forced to pray at home.
